    IDEA #1: Fabulous Fabrics

    Work a thrifty transformation you can change with the season by making fabric and pillows the primary elements. This lively scheme is refreshing, perfect for a studio or corner of a room that doubles as a sleep space.

    FABRICS: The vibrant mix of saris introduced to a white-on-white backdrop (walls, rug, matelassé) dress up the room without dominating it. The sheets and throw pillows are cotton florals in the same color medley.

    FURNITURE: The profiles of the metal daybed and chair and table set keep the mood light. Formerly used on a patio, they bring a feeling of the garden inside—it's always spring!

    ACCESSORIES: The flokati rug introduces a playful touch (so nice underfoot!). Luminescent antique bowls lend romance. Touches of blue moderate the warm reds and pinks.

    LIGHTING: The pendant lamp, a mix of different eras, is an element of surprise and delight. Find quirky pieces at thrift stores, then add some panache with a colorful new shade.

    LIGHTING THAT'S LIVELY: When choosing fixtures, try to find at least one that makes a statement with a distinctive detail. If it's an antique, make sure the wiring is sound before installing.

    COLOR THEORY: You can introduce lots of strong colors to a room if you keep the values of each color the same. Here, touches of deep aqua blue function to balance out the saturated reds, pinks, and oranges.

    THRIFTY CHIC: A wonderful, and wonderfully affordable, decorative option, saris can be found for as little as $25. Use them in easy sewing projects and change colors as you like.
