I don't believe in homogeneity. Anyone who says you have to look one way--like a sunny Californian or a polished New Yorker all the time--is mad," declares London makeup artist Hannah Murray, as she sips a cup of tea at Topshop's glossy white showroom in New York City's SoHo.
"Now, English girls," she says, smiling, "English girls like being offbeat and imperfect." She should know, having been the beauty force behind the (utterly fabulous) insouciance of It Brits like Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, Pixie Geldof, and Daisy Lowe. And in her role as Topshop's consulting makeup artist, Murray is bringing her fresh sensibility to the company's new line--a 100-pieces-strong-and-counting collection of deeply covetable cosmetics, from sparkly eyeliners to quirky-cool nail polish.
"I want people to put on Topshop make-up the way they shop for the clothes at the store," explains Murray. "You know--piling it on, mashing it all together, and generally being rather fearless, for a style that's totally their own. I call it 'English eccentric,' but it's fabulous anywhere!"
