I'm sorry to all of my green friends out there, but it has to be said: Composting has just jumped the shark. In one of the most disgusting articles I've ever read on CNN, the "Living" site teaches us how to compost our dog's poop. So let's talk about the rules here in composting poop. In addition to making sure you aren't burying the poop in a water table and contaminating your community's water source, you also cannot use the dog poop to fertilize plants you may eat. Or really anywhere you would come in contact with the poop because dog poop carries the possibility of disease like E. coli and Giardia. In addition to these very serious dangers, composting dog poop will also make your backyard constantly smell like s---.
Seriously. Who would do this?
Even though I do take daily actions to live in an eco-friendly way, I actually haven't started a compost in my backyard because I have a dog who will dig it up and eat it. And no, I don't think that if I then compost her poop, then it's all good.

Dog poop, not unlike human poop, is toxic. Yes, this article acknowledges that and talks about taking precautions. (Or buying a poop processor for $100.) But that fact alone should make you not want to keep poop around. Also, who wants to keep dealing with poop long after the pooping is through? Who???
I know we have limited space in our landfills, in our sewers, in our oceans. But keeping waste in your yard is not the answer. Or if it is, please remind me to never come over to your house for a backyard bbq.
