Hate Your Job? 5 Ways to Make Work Better

Never mind Monday morning -- does every day at work get you down? Most of us can't just quit our jobs...but we can do little things to make work better.

Don't knock these tips until you try them! You never know what could result from putting these babies into action...

    1. Take your lava lamps and green plants to work. Both are scientifically proven to reduce stress and improve health on the job. The motion of the lava lamp is visually relaxing, and green plants increase job satisfaction by providing a sense of rest. Research shows that having plants in your office is more beneficial than having a window!

    2. Develop strategies for coping with workplace bullying and office conflicts. The better equipped you are to cope with conflict at work -- such as dealing with office politics -- the less mental stress and strain you'll feel. Achieving your career goals is more about empowerment than getting a job promotion. Take classes or read books about dealing with difficult coworkers. Go to workshops or "brown bag sessions" on workplace communication, job success, or employee interactions. Take an evening course on succeeding on the job, or creating a better work environment .

    3. Schedule "mental health" days. Don't reserve time off for when you or your family is physically ill, or you're on vacation! Schedule one workday every couple of months just for relaxing, pursuing your favorite leisure activity, or catching up on stuff at home. This may be a lot to ask your employer -- and it's often difficult to leave work for "no reason" -- but it's worth the effort.

    4. Deal with your health problems immediately. If you're flirting with depression, stomachaches, stress headaches, or chronic fatigue, go to a doctor as soon as possible. This is especially important if you've recently won a job promotion ! Research on job promotions shows that after advancing at work, employees are 20% less likely to visit their doctors for routine physicals or specific health complaints. Promoted workers have more time constraints that, coupled with increased mental strain and stress, leads to fewer doctors' visits and poorer health.

    5. Know thyself -- get comfortable with your own personality. For example, people with introverted personality traits may feel socially inept, weird, or antisocial. Introverts don't always realize that they're simply drained by groups of people and that they process their thoughts differently than extroverts. The more you know about your personality - and the more comfortable you are with yourself - the easier it'll be to like your job. And, dealing with workplace stress is easier when you have a little self-awareness and insight into how you tick. If you're an introvert, you might find career tips for introverts helpful.

I wish I could take a mental health day as frequent as my other co-workers do but unfortunatly im the only one who speaks spanish in my company and when im not around it seems as tho $#1t always hits the fan... im sick right now typing from work... this sucks... wishing i could be at home right now

This sucks. I work on cars at an Automobile dealer using the "Flat Rate" pay rate. I'm at work eight hours and only get paid for five hours because I only get paid for the "work" I do. Now you know why a lot of Mechanics become their own victims of greed. Ever get told you needed brakes. Ask for the brake pads when they are done. Dealerships are squeezing every bit out mechanics, some not "Factory Trained" like they say they are so they can pay them even less money. Imagine going to Toyota to get your accelerator pedal fixed by some guy who used to install car stereos with no proper training. The average Mechanic used to get $75,000 a year, they made more money per hour. The labor rate has doubled since, Mechanics only make about $50,000 a year now.

Overall, the article is pretty good - if one worked for a company that valued "human resources". My daily responsibilities as an manager, coupled with the changes in our organizations, and the physical environment that I work in has recently taxed my coping and management skills. Thanks for sharing simple tips to try...the best tip you provided was to seek medical attention - stress can reek havoc on the body as well as the mind. Now...if I could only find the time to schedule a doctor's appointment...

Hi everybody!!! I love my job!!! Everyday at lunch I go get me some tacos. I spend a lot of time imagining what all the people would look like with different hair. Then I go home and watch my new flat-screen tv. What could be better than that??

I used to be like many others.... always stressing, always off the wall, always fatigued, always over worked.... 50-60 hour work weeks....
      Not any more!
I take it easy, I get to things when I get to it, I work on 1 thing at a time... & I let me boss know, there are only 8 hours in 1 day, what I dont get done today... I will tomorrow. Yes. It burns him up, but who cares.... I dont.
Remember this everyone: The company you shed blood, sweat, and tears for... will replace you as soon as they realize your price tag is no longer viable for the company and/or you become ill...etc...
They will not help you or your family, they will not send a rep. to your house finding out how you are doing or give a follow up call to see if you want to come back..... All they will do is replace your name on the wall and tell others to forward the emails to another person.

when i saw the tittle, i feel why people hate their jobs. they must not be in unemployment situation before. don't waste time to think about hate first, look around on the street while you are taking transportation to work. thinking about how lucky are you if you are employ right now. so many people are lost their job without any choice to hate it. enjoy your work and don't spoil yourself or Americans.

Are you kidding me???? #3 Just burns my a** - I DO NOT have sick days or personal days - I get 5 days of Vacation in ONE year & I have been here for over 2 years with NO raise! I have to save those days for sick days and funeral leave. Yes, I hate my job so why don't you come up with something that can make it work better for those of us who work for an El Cheapo boss who does not appreciate his Employee? I have plants in my office and it don't help cheer me up any.

All of these normal strategies can work; what about dealing with a unreasonable, toxic boss?
    • lillybelle  •  2 years 1 month ago
I could actually try #2 or #3. The one thing I like about my job is that every month they give us next month's schedule where you can request any days off you want and have someone cover for you. But if it isn't vacation or sick day, you don't get paid. I can't really afford taking off just because. This article doesn't help me because I hate the fact that I graduated top of my class with bachelors and can't find anything right now. I still have the same job I did while in college, I'm a receptionist only a with better pay than before and full-time. But I'm still a receptionist who feels like a loser for not being able to find something better after college. This is why I hate my job.

I work in an office environment and I have to say, I actually have used some of these tips. I used to come in early, stay late, very rarely take a day off, (that's why I have so much time accumulated) and I realized it was physically and mentally taking a toll on me. So now I take a day off, every so often, leave at 5:30 pm like I am supposed to and leave, ignore the co-worker drama and it seems to have made a big difference in my stress level. I am sure when and if the economy ever gets better employers will HAVE to make changes or they wont have any employees....

Right on, Rob! The suggestions made in this article are at best unrealistic and at worst downright laughable!

Take it from someone who's been there! If you have the ability to exit a bad situation, do so A.S.A.P.!

Do not try to to stick it out if you have another option; IT'S NOT WORTH IT!!! If you don't immediately have another option, look for work elsewhere every spare moment you can, but be careful not to do it at the place you are currently employed.
