    How to Catch a Liar

Are you being lied to? Find out how you can tell.

    1. How is the person speaking?
Although a change in voice can be the tip-off to a lie, experts say that to be sure, you should also pay attention to a person's speech rate and breathing pattern -- if either speeds up or slows down, chances are you're not hearing the whole truth.

Jupiterimages CorporationJupiterimages Corporation2. What is the person saying?
Liars tend to avoid exclusionary words like "but," "nor," "except," and "whereas," because they have trouble with complex thought processes. Liars are less likely to use the words "I," "me," and "mine." In their attempts to distance themselves psychologically from their tall tales, liars will tend to communicate using fewer personal pronouns.

    3. Is his face giving it away?
You may think disguising your true feelings is easily accomplished with the help of a smile, but the expressions that flash across your face will give away what you're really thinking -- whether you know it or not. Experts advise paying close attention to the micro-expressions that a face can't hide. These clues are often so difficult to detect that even trained experts have trouble discerning them.

    4. How is the person smiling?
A smile can sometimes mask a person's true feelings. Pay close attention to how a person smiles as well as other facial movements. You may be able to detect the emotions he or she is trying to hide -- such as fear, anger, and disgust. A true smile will incorporate both a person's lips and eyes.

    5. Does the body language follow the story?
It's more important to examine a person's entire demeanor, as there's no one feature that's apt to give away a liar. Honesty is characterized by features that are in sync with one another -- so besides posture, note the fit between face, body, voice, and speech.

    6. Is your subject behaving uncharacteristically?
Experts believe changes in a person's baseline -- how she generally conducts herself -- are worthy of your attention. You should weigh rate of speech, tone of voice, posture, and hand gestures against what you know, along with the context of the situation.

    7. Is the question simple or embarrassing?
It's normal for someone to look away when asked a difficult question. But when someone avoids your gaze when asked a simple question, you should be suspicious.

a common thing liars do is say as little as possible when asked a direct question and they need to take care of something else right away.... they are everyplace....most liars are f--- ed up people to begin with.... they finally get caught and they just move on to a new group and you become invisible... its happened to me a few times...always involving money....these people never pay or they lie and cheat you ....been burned several times..it sucks

This is nonsense. There are various types of liars. Common everyday, white lies and lies about where, and with who someone slept with, are often easiest to uncover. Real liars prepare both their targets and their audiences and practice both lies and responses and plan for all eventualities.
Not all are crazy, like some liars who do not know the difference between the truth and reality, many have so internalized a lie or set of lies that they will have it covered by layers of secondary and tertiary lies the nature of which is impossible to discover because they are usually the only witness to their lies and fanasies.
These are the most dangerous liars: perfectly sane people with personal or criminal agendas. Woman who want to steal men are to times more prevalent than men who wish to steal women and , as females are taught to think of themselves as put upon by society and weak. these liars will resort to vicious accusations of rape and sexual brutality long before they are even needed.
Police forces, with rape squads staffed by women, are virtually required to give them the benefit of the doubt, and almost always believe a woman's story before a man's anyway and, as a result, half to 90% or all men in jail for "rape" are there as a result of phony charges by cruel women who feel weak and persecuted, and thus feel they have a right to lie about everything.
A Few children have a similar problem, but as long as sex does not enter into the lie, they are almost always found out within minutes at most. However, once a child makes a molestation charge, even if they don't understand it, the machinery of prosecution takes over , as in the McMartin case and numerous similar cases where infant and toddlers were persuaded by police that they had been victimized. When most of these kids became older, the children themselves, moved to have the charges dismissed, admitting that they had been coerced, bribed and often threatened by police agents and psychologists to lie about their teachers.
I have seen almost every kind of liar and if you think you can tell one of the experts from the real liars, you are probably next in line to be successfully lied to.

Some people learn to routinely and repeatedly lie early in children (abusive parents teach them) to the extent it is so natural and normal to them that they exhibit none of these signs and you have to catch them by what they actually say and in relation to what they actually do compared to what they say. Salams.

A lier tends to stutter cant look you in the eye. He or she will say you dont beleave me, check! to try to cover up him or her saying check go ahead check and being insisting, is the miliputive for I dont realy want you to check but by me telling you to check will show you I have nothing to hide.. Or to go ahead and check cuz I already have covered up what I needed to hide or have my other story already lined up. Another way to discover a lier is they try to create and eventful day for the two of you to avoide the topic of ever coming up/ Akward silence arouse.... Then blame you for ruening a AKA surprise or eventful day for bringing up the subject that caused a argument.

Some people lie when they don't have to .Like compulsive liars . On the other hand the people who are truly honest and telling the truth are getting the short end. because people are always skeptical and suspicious of genuine honesty and moral..When I say I swear I am telling the truth. so for those who abuse I swear to..... what ever they are swearing to is violating the code in my opinion. People who don't believe a person will say then swear. If they don't believe a person then that person should not have to swear. Their word should be enough. You have your reasons for not believing someone is telling you the truth. it's like if your best-friend or colleague ask you do you like my new blouse or suit and you said well NO then they may never talk to you again., But if you say..It looks great on you, but its really not my style. then your not offending them.
and as far as Scams and Con artist beware! if you don't know them then take precaution. Even if you know them use your best judgment and go by your gut feeling if it doesn't feel right or too good to be true . DON'T Give In. and always get a second persons opinion of what they think from an unbiased - open minded point of view..

"3. Is his face giving it away?" His face? HIS!?! Just another perfect example of the man haters at yahoo. Look, I'm not unreasonable but come on! I know guys lie but isn't not like women are these earthly saints that spread virtue where ever they go, they're just people too. Whoever wrote this obviously spent a lot of time trying to make sure it wasn't targeting one sex specifically but when they let these little freudian slips go or worse yet, when I feel some of the other articles directly attack men, I wonder if there is anyone at yahoo who even cares about trying to be unbiased. I'm not asking for perfection here, just a little window where not all men are instantly assumed to be jerks.

OMG. I agree with David, "this is the most general article". We ALL know that people lie and you are supposed to be able to tell by what they say, how they say it, their expressions, and body language...DUH! But where are the details? What do their eyes 'do' when they are lying? Can you say "EXAMPLES please" or dont even bother. What a waste of time reading. Any highschooler could have known and written this article. Blah blah blah. I dont even know why I wasted my time commenting on such a blatantly 'filler' article. Your got our attention with the header, but you let us down with content. Put some meat in the article or dont waste our time.

#7 hint seem rather culture insensitive. Too many people are so insensitive to the cultural practices of others and as a result misjudge people. Let it be known to you and other readers that it is very common that some cultures around the world find it insulting and disrespectful to look straight into the eyes of an elderly person or even someone superior to you in life be it proffessionally or even in age. Please be mindful of that!!!

The Title of this article, is "How to Catch a Liar." And yet, the number 3 point, is "Is his face giving it away." That statement in of itself seems to be a little deceptive, as if one sex doesn't lie and the other does, which can be misleading since lying can happen with both males and females. Wouldn't it be more accurate in approaching the topic as "Is the person's face giving it away?"
    • Tycho  •  1 year 9 months ago
This article has made me a much better liar.

      Thanks!
    • Anck-Su-Namun  •  1 year 9 months ago
Maybe that is why Facebook is so popular! People can be dishonest about themselves on there and no one is the wiser!
Think about it! There is no face to face communication anymore due to all the gadgets available now. People can be dishonest all the time. Gee, maybe this author should do more research!
Or am I not telling the truth right now?! You will never know due to Yahoo postings being available.
