YOUR FRIENDS' ACTIVITY

Introducing: Manage Your Life on Shine

Getty ImagesGetty ImagesThis may be a new channel on Shine, but it should look pretty familiar. You'll find the same kind of money-saving and time-saving suggestions, job advice, and DIY help you've hopefully come to expect on Work+Money and At Home.

We've combined work, money, and home on Shine because the boundaries between them often overlap, don't they? Many of us are working from home at least part of the time, and we've set up home offices in a spare bedroom or at the kitchen table. While we're at work, we often carve out a few minutes from breaks to tend to the details of the other parts of our lives so we're not up 'til 2 a.m. getting everything we need to done.

We've learned quite a few things since launching Shine a year ago. One thing is this: While most of us would love to have the time to pore through photos of beautifully decorated rooms and unique items for the home, the truth is we often go online in search of solutions. And we don't have a lot of time to find them. So Manage Your Life is all about sharing advice, tips and tricks for getting organized at work and at home, tending personal finances, finding deals for the home and travel away from home, and for tackling DIY home projects even the least handy of us can do.

That's why Manage Your Life will be big on solutions for our everyday challenges - squeezing as much as possible out of a weekly food budget, cleaning when we don't have time (or the desire) to clean, trying new ways to get more done in less time on the job, or finding a job in one of the scariest job markets in memory.

Look for posts on unique ways to save money in uncertain times, for decorating on a tight budget, and for getting (and staying) organized in every corner of our busy lives. Mostly, look for each other to share what's working in our lives, what's not, and how we try, every day, to do the best we can in the many roles we play.

    Together, we can manage anything.

Hi! If you have a special craft/talent you enjoy and need something you can't buy at the time maybe we could go back to bartering. If you make my daughter a new dress (example) I will make a birthday cake for you. Everyone has a talent that others don't. It's nice to learn something new but it can be costly for the necessary supplies and right now that is the problem...lack of funds. Let me know what you think as you could save time and money by bartering.

I am really, really disapointed that these categories were combined. I liked being able to go to the at home category and know that I would just find stuff for my home. If I'm redecorating, or tending to my new garden, why do I need to sift through posts about workplace politics and investment information? This has really just made things more complicated for me.

      Dori,

Just popping back in to say the corruption problem is all "fixed". It appears it was necessary for Shine to edit each post individually and I cringed at the problem. I'm so sorry it happened and hope that my html wasn't the source of the problem.

Again, looking forward to exciting new blogging opportunities for all.

      Thanks,
      Devonia

Devonia, one more thing. Entertainment is no longer a separate channel, and any posts that are entertainment-related are distributed in the other channels where they fit well. Our community manager, Brenda, wrote an excellent overview of the changes we've made on Shine; you can find it on the homepage in the "community" box.

      Good morning Dory,

"So we're on it". Terrific! I'll give it some time then.

I liked DIY, as well, Dory. However, since most tend to think of D.I.Y. as handy man tricks (washer in the faucet) - something that gave a nod to all of the moms who "make things" for their home, gifts, personal pleasure would be so welcome. Hearthside crafts? I'll look forward to any subcategories- I know they will be exciting.

I understand about Entertainment and will look for Brenda's post.

      Thanks,
      Devonia

This category is too broad and generic. I preferred having work and money on it's own. Sorry, Dory.

Hi Frugal_Fam -- yes. If you click on edit for your individual blog posts (after clicking on "manage" in the top right on this page), go to the category pull-down menu and choose "manage your life." Any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

After recently losing my paycheck I found myself in need of clothes and so I organized a "Clothing Exchange" Party. You just invite your friends to bring their clothes and if you want they can bring a little something to drink or eat.
I got a pair of jeans that fit perfectly and also got rid of some jeans I never wear!

I try to do these party's more often cause peoples schedules don't always match up.
I tell everyone in advance that they are short and sweet parties so they are not a social burden.

Also another helpful hint...if I have a friend that wouldn't mix well with another I make the visits one on one and let one of them go through all the left over clothes before I drop them off at 'Goodwill'.
