When Sandra Bullock's marriage famously imploded last year, shortly after she picked up the Academy Award for Best Actress, we started to think the "Oscar curse" might really exist.By Zoë Ruderman
After all, it happened to Reese Witherspoon (who won in 2005 and divorced Ryan Phillipe the following year), Halle Berry (won in 2001 and split from Eric Benet in 2003), Hilary Swank (won in 2004 and ended her marriage to Chad Lowe in 2005), and many others who'd walked away with a statue.
And recently researchers at the University of Toronto found that the curse is for real. They looked at all of the Best Actress winners from 1936 till now and found that they're 1.68 times more likely to divorce as actresses who were nominated, but didn't win. The men who got the Oscar for Best Actor, however, weren't found to have a higher rate of relationship demise following their big win.
Many people have attributed this statue-then-split cycle to pure coincidence. After all, in the case of Sandra, she just happened to have partnered up with a total scumbag, so their breakup was probably inevitable, Academy Award or not. But we think for many of the couples, there was something else going on-namely, the woman's success/fame boost was just too much for the relationship-or should we say, the man?

And it got us thinking about non-Hollywood couples. So we asked Cosmo readers if a promotion or raise at work ever lead to a breakup.
And nearly one in 10 women said that it had, with 50 percent of them saying the split happened within just a month of their success at the office. (On the other hand, only 5 percent of women said they had experienced a breakup after the guy got a promotion or raise.)

Over 12 percent of the nearly 1,000 Cosmo readers polled said that they fight more with their boyfriend or husband after getting a promotion or raise.
