J.K. Rowling to Write Adult Novel: Will Her Fans Approve?

J.K. RowlingJ.K. Rowling, author of the blockbuster Harry Potter series, has announced she is going to write an adult novel. It's been nearly five years since the best-selling kid's scribe in history published her last book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and it's going to be a tough act to follow. "JK Rowling announcing a new book is almost like god announcing a follow-up to the Bible," tweeted fan Natalie Summers.

The Potter books have sold more than 400 million copies worldwide. The first in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, was published in 1997. For her new novel, Rowling switched publishers leaving Scholastic for Little, Brown. "The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry's success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher. I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life," she said in a statement. The Washington Post hints that writing an adult novel may be as much a canny move as it is literary progression on Rowling's part. If her original fans were between 10 and 14-years-old when the series began, they are now in their mid- to late twenties and primed for more grown-up fare from their favorite author.

There is some speculation that the new book will be a detective whodunit. Ian Rankin, a top-selling crime fiction writer in the U.K and Rowling's former neighbor tweeted, ""Wouldn't it be funny if J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults turned out to be a crime story set in Edinburgh? My word yes…." Rowling herself is being characteristically mysterious. Her official website pictures a copy of a fat hardcover titled "New Book" and a hand written note that teases: "Although I've enjoyed writing it just as much, my next novel will be very different from the Harry Potter series."

As it is, most of those kids who started reading the Harry Potter books are all adults now anyway, why not? And who cares if they approve? She has so much money she could crap a book out and the losses wouldn't make a dent. Also, I would like to point out the oft-overlooked fact that the series was not intended to be pigeonholed as "kids" books. We have the media and marketing to thank for that. I wouldn't let a young child go from reading “Winnie the Pooh" to "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", would you?

I will so read her books. I read the Harry Potter books when I was 8 and I'm going to be 18 in May. Can't wait to read more books from J.k.

I will definitely read it. I've loved Harry Potter since I was 13, I am now 25. I'm excited to see new material from her, she's a talented writer.

Yes to everything in the comments so far (only 9 posts). Haters are gonna hate, but Rowling is an AMAZING author and I hope she writes til the day she dies.

I'm not sure if I will read it or not. I will however say I wish she'd go back to the mauraders days and write a book about them!

I can't wait. I started reading her when I was 12 and now at 23 I'd still read her. She has a lot of talent.

Man, I'll probably go to a midnight book release with my friends.

The fans will approve. But I'm not sure the adults will take her seriously.

The adults? She's sold nearly half a billion books. I'm pretty sure there's plenty of adults out there who've read her.

If not, then she'll still make NY Times best sellers list from her fans alone.

Reread the article. Her original fan-base (those that grew up with the series) are adults now.

She can and should write anything she wants. She hs so much money, it doesn't matter if the book makes a profit. TYhe bottom line is that we will likely have a new well written book to read if we choose to do so.
