Luxury or Folly? the 7 Most Expensive Kitchen Gadgets

This kitchen or your kid's college education? Hmmm...This kitchen or your kid's college education? Hmmm...Equipping a kitchen doesn't have to be an expensive proposition -- you can get everything you need for a few hundred bucks. But if you're interested in spending a lot of money, that's pretty easy to do, too. From $2,000 for a dishwasher to $20,000 for an espresso maker, there's a world of ultra-expensive kitchen gadgets out there. Some of them are worth the money if you think you'll use them regularly, but most aren't. Here are 7 of the most expensive kitchen gadgets around. Do you think they're worth it?

Thermomix TM 31 Thermomix TM 31 1. Thermomix TM 31
I want to hate the German-made Thermomix, because it's ugly. Like, really ugly. But it does everything -- it's a food processor, steamer, kitchen scale, mixer, blender, chafing dish, and more. Moreover, unlike most gadgets that do more than one thing, it actually does those things well. So even at $1,400, it's not a rip-off. Ready to buy one? Get in your car and start driving north until you see a sign that says "Welcome to Canada," because you can't get one in the U.S.

This $20,000 espresso machine was made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Victoria Arduino. Now some things seem like a waste of money to me, but who am I to tell someone else what they can and can't buy? That said, if you're thinking of dropping $20K on an espresso machine, I'd like to remind you that Oxfam is an outstanding charity that really does important work.

I don't doubt that there are people out there who can discriminate between a perfectly cooked bowl of rice and a nearly perfectly cooked bowl of rice. But I'm not one of those people and a regular rice cooker is perfectly fine with me, thank you very much. If you're a rice supertaster, this model is apparently made from a single piece of carbon and will cost you $1,449.
