If Meryl Streep wasn't so good at making us cry, she'd be best known for making us laugh. I was reminded of this watching the trailer (see below) for her new movie Hope Springs, in theaters August 10th. As Kay, she's a woman who's been married to the same guy for so long they consider a cable TV upgrade a romantic anniversary gift. "It's a lot of channels," says Kay defensively. It's a funny line, but the timing of Streep's halting delivery heightens the hilarity.
If she weren't so good in Sophie's Choice or Kramer vs. Kramer, maybe there would be more comparisons to Kristin Wiig, another comic with a knack for unexpectedly spot-on female caricatures. Let's revisit some of her funniest movie moments, shall we?
