Go with the flow in loose, low-key waves. "You can actually make hat hair chic," says New York City-based Redken hairstylist Guido Palau. "It's just a matter of the right products and preparation!"
From military-inspired headgear at Proenza Schouler to winsome caps at Phillip Lim, hats ruled the spring runways-but without any of hat hair's telltale bumps and ridges. "A good trick is to spray a styling product and braid hair before you put your hat on," says Guido Palau, renowned hairstylist and creative consultant for Redken. When you head indoors, unbraid your tresses for soft, bed-head ripples that lay flat along the crown and start waving around the ears. "Turn your head upside down, shake hair out, and it'll look perfect," he advises. For added volume (or for shorter lengths), "Don't flatten hair down to your scalp, where the oils are," says Gretta Monahan, founder of Boston's Grettacole salon and GSpa. "Brush it straight back-away from your face and temples-under your hat. Later, it'll fall back into place with more body." Whether you're hitting the slopes or heading to school, just remember not to overthink it. As Palau puts it, "This season's hair is as low-stress as it gets. It's pretty, but undone and utterly low-maintenance."
TIP 1: Deep condition at least once a week to counteract dry winter air.
TIP 2: Avoid pin-straight styles-hat hair is less noticeable on natural-looking, wavy locks.
TIP 3: Carry a travel-sized tube of styling cream (or even hand lotion) to tackle static and flyaways.
