Nobel Peace Prize for Obama: Too early or shrewd move?

AP/President Obama speaks in the Rose Garden about being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.AP/President Obama speaks in the Rose Garden about being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.Talk about pressure!

President Barack Obama woke up this morning to find out along with the rest of the world that he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize--for accomplishments he hasn't actually achieved yet. It's the story of his history-making life, isn't it? It seems the guy can't get enough praise and accolades, all based on his potential if not for what he has truly achieved.

The head-scratching irony of being in the company of the likes of Nelson Mandela, the 14th Dalai Lama, and Elie Wiesel is not lost on the president. He appeared a bit grim-faced, embarrassed even, with his eyes cast downward to his notes when he made his prompter-less remarks in the Rose Garden this morning. He said he was "surprised and deeply humbled" by the honor. "Let me be clear:" he added. "I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations."

While some, as Gawker writes, called for Obama to turn down the prize awarded on spec, the president chose to accept it--"as a call to action, a call for all nations to confront the challenges of the 21st century."

The word from the Norwegian Nobel Committee is that Obama deserves the award now because he has "created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play."

The committee's gushing continued: "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future."

It seems one thing to be elected on hope, but to receive the world's highest peace prize based on its ethereal promise is quite another.

As Nicholas Kristof wrote in his Times blog this morning
: "I think he has the right instincts on these issues and expect him to get engaged, but shouldn't the Nobel Peace Prize have a higher bar than high expectations? Especially when there are so many people who have worked for years and years on the front lines, often in dangerous situations, to make a difference to the most voiceless people of the world?"

But as Obama noted, the prize is often bestowed as a means of creating momentum, and clearly, the keepers of the Nobel Peace Prize want to see some true momentum, not just rhetoric, when it comes to nuclear disarmament and world peace. So if one of the coveted prizes is given out to apply some heavy-handed political pressure to bring about real change, the Norwegian Nobel Committee seems to be saying, so be it.

Do you think it's a little early to give Obama the Nobel Peace Prize, or a shrewd move by the committee in Oslo to let him know the world is watching, and we all want results?

Jad- If you set up a trust to further a particular cause important to you, and specified that it was to be disbursed according to conditions you specified, you'd be OK with the administrators of that trust altering those condition and the purpose of your bequest itself to suit their own "changed" purposes?

This is not how legal trusts are supposed to work, and I don't know how the Nobel committee gets away with it. Perhaps the Norwegian legal system is not that strict. Or maybe the committee has just developed so much discretionary power over the years that it can now disregard the clear instructions of the man who made and bequeathed the money, and established the prize in the first place.

Yes, that applied to Gore's prize, too---another instance of awarding for (1) works having nothing to do with international peace, and (2) a finger in George Bush's eye. ( This does not mean that Gore's efforts are not important and useful. It simply means that they were not what the peace prize was supposed to be about. It's like awarding a Grammy for an acting performance, or an Oscar for performance in a play: wrong award for the circumstances. )

President Obama may one day merit the prize for actual accomplishments, but now he won't get it, because he's already gotten it for the banal reason of being "not Bush". You don't find that a bit sad?

      Jentheicequeen,

Tally up your token black friends. Standard conservative move. You found a few that ALMOST fit your standards, did you?

Why don't all white politicians have to show you their birth certificates? Because they're white and you're no one. K. Thanks.

OOOOOOHHHHHHH.....I have a GREAT idea! I have great expectations for the future of our country. I want to end the war, cure cancer and make us all united. GREAT INTENTIONS, huh???

Now, when do I get my Noble Prize? That is fair right?

If Obama did not feel he deserved it (yet), he should NOT have accepted it...but he did...that should show alot of people his real intentions!

Come on America... Your nation acts as world superpower and able to control and persuade the good and bad to the world. Mr. Bush has done so much bad in the past to the world, I don't know of how bad it was for America. I never liked him at all, he was like head of world police. Obama on the other hand has an entire different methodology in building relationship with the rest of world and many of us are surprised over his compassion and skills. Humanity not just comes from how much a person has done but also the intelligent approaches and the level of speed it spreads globally. He (Obama) as the President able to send this message rapidly across the globe more efficiently than anyone else. He has the power and he is making use of it to send the right message. I'm not trying to justify that it was too early or shrewd move. I think the actual reason behind the decision for the Nobel Peace Prize was the ability breaking the barrier that no other US President had done in the past few decades. It also shows that the world welcomes his move and changes in global policies and diplomatic ties. The world is watching Mr. Obama's move and wants him to continue his humanity approaches in the same and better way.

For American, Hi guys, I believe that your President is doing a good job in saving the crippled economy by your former President. No one is perfect (we know it), at least this guy is striving hard to do something useful for the people and the nation.

It doesn't matter whether you are black or white. What's important are to preserve the humanity and world peace. If only Bush had been a little more wiser, we could have a better life now.

I hope that President Obama will stay on his path and excel in his task to create a better well. The world don't wish to see another combo Bush effects.

I will admit that there is clear racism in some of the attacks against Obama. It's undeniable but when people like Jimmy Carter make statements that all of the opposition to the health care plan at these town halls is racially motivated , it puts fear into all of us. It feels like we are losing our freeedom of speech. I oppose Obama because he is pro-choice. I can't give him a pass on that just because he is black and I'm afraid to be called a racist.

The point I am making is that yes, Obama does have to deal with racism and attacks that no other president has faced but the race card should not be overplayed and used as a weapon against his critics. It's unfair and downright scary.

Wow William C... Really? So then I'm guessing you don't know about all the contributions Bush made (mostly on behalf of the United States) to Africa... in fact, he did more for the African AIDS fight than any other President before him (he tripled aid)... so much so that even Obama has praised him for it... Pres. Bush was not perfect, in fact he did a lot of things wrong, but he was not inherently evil as you apparently are inferring.

And like I said before our country does not have a dictator... so it is virtually impossible for a President in this country to single handedly destroy anything.... Approval must come also from our Congress...

      Katie B.,

You keep making the same statement about racism, while ignoring those who post here who are clearly racist. Case in point, you called out Kerry because you disagree with what she wrote, but chose to ignore Gringa's clearly racist statements. Why is that? Why do you want to ignore racism when it's right in front of your face? Is it because it makes you uncomfortable? Is it because you're afraid your "friends" here will turn on you if you acknowledge it?

LEGITIMATE criticisms of President Obama don't get accused of being racist when they actually are LEGITIMATE.

All presidents have been criticized. However, no president has ever been attacked in the same way that Obama has. No president has ever been faced with racism. No president has ever faced an entire portion of the country insisting that the president is illigitimate because they FALSELY insist he is not Christian, even though Christianity doesn't matter. No president has ever faced an entire portion of the coutnry insisting that the president is illigitimate because they FALSELY believe he is a terrorist.

Droves of white, Christian, conservatives, ramped up on hate and ignorance, accuse this President of not being a citizen, being a nazi, being a socialist, communist, fascist, insisting that these terms are equal and interchangable. They insist he's an Arab. They insist he's anything but the American and the president. More American people have threatened to kill this president than any other president in America's history.

I'm tired of conservatives ignoring the clear racism shown toward this president. I'm tired of conservatives continuing to state that this president has been treated the same as all other presidents when it's absolutely clear that he hasn't been.

omg!!! you guys are kidding me!! i guess if it were bush that was getting the award then every one would be okay with it! Bush didn't do anything but kill troops in the war ahem obama should get the award just for being man enough and willing to come behind bush and try to fix all of his screw ups. you ppl didn't expect bush to be perfect when he stood up there and made all of those false promises about what he was gonna do for america why do you do it to obama he actually got up and did something that not to many pres. so which tell the truth. he truthfully admitted that he wasn't perfect and that he may not fix america in this term but it would eventually get better. so come on stop being so judgemental and realize that this is our pres. by the way bush may have not agreed w/ abortions but he sure agreed to sending our troops (husbands, sons, daughters, wives) to a pointless war and consequently some even died because of HIS arrogance!!! by the way the bush admin. deserves a bunch of fingers pointed at them and then some.
    • Fernanda  •  2 years 7 months ago
People just want a reason to not like or criticize Obama. And hmmm I wonder why so many of these people are...WHITE????? There's wayyy too many outrageous things being said about the man right now...and it's all just so disrespectful. A lot of it stems from racism. Just go on youtube and type in "racism at McCain Rallies". I was watching it and it was sooo disturbing to hear and see how racist people are. Honestly, it almost makes me afraid for Obama's life.
Let's give the guy a chance...this is our President and he deserves respect! It took Bush 8 years to destroy the economy and get us stuck in an unnecessary war, of course Obama can't fix the mess in less than a year!!
    • k8blujay  •  2 years 7 months ago
Suga... actually Bush was nominated to get it after 9/11... only Carter recieved it instead... and if Bush had gotten it I would question it too...

Fernanda... at no time in this countries history does the President have absolute power to destroy anything... you want someone to blame for our economic downturn, then you better start looking at our Congress as well. Because they have at the very least an equal portion of the responsibility (since they are the ones that were supposed to be making the rules and overseeing the industries)..

and another thing... the "racism" excuse for defending Obama is getting old... Yes, there are some racists that are against him, but there are also racists that support him... and not everyone that criticizes President Obama is a racist.... How is it racist if you claim to be Republican and oppose Democratic bills and legislation... especially if you have been doing it since before Obama was President... sounds more like partisanship than racism... there is a very VERY distinct difference and partisanship does not automatically equate to racism... I (and many others) oppose Obama not because of what color his skin just so happens to be... but because my ideals happen to land right of center and his lands left of center.... this is not racism nor is it anywhere close... People were JUST as hard on Bush as they are on Obama... the only difference is Bush had a tragedy to bring people to respect him and give him a chance.... even though he squandered that pretty quick... The opposite side will ALWAYS be against the sitting President... that is called politics and is in almost all case mutually exclusive...
    • k8blujay  •  2 years 7 months ago
Wow Angela.... Seriously? Maybe I didn't see Gringa's post... I don't read each and every post on this site, or even on the blog I am posting on (unless I write it)... I only read the posts that stand out to me.... And never once have I said that there weren't people that hate, despise or oppose Obama because of his race... I have even stated numerous times that there are Obama supporters that are also racist (ie support him because he is black and no other reason).... And why do you assume they are my "friends" because we are all conservatives? I have no beef against anyone here... and I will point out things that I disagree with IF they stand out to me.... but I'm not going to waste my time reading everyone's ranting and raving of every little thing.... there are over 300 posts here I am not going to read and comment on every one of them.... I have better things to do....

*** OBAMA AND THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE, BID FOR INFLUENCE AND NOT THANKS FOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ***

First, a few world headlines support the notion that Obama's Prize is more like an engagement ring after a two week fling, than an anniversary band recognizing years of true effort.

List of Nobel Peace Prize Awardees (Last Half of 20th Century):
1998 - John Hume, David Trimble
      1993 - Nelson Mandela, F.W. de Klerk
1991 - Aung San Suu Kyi
      1990 - Mikhail Gorbachev
      1989 - The 14th Dalai Lama
      1986 - Elie Wiesel
      1984 - Desmond Tutu
      1983 - Lech Walesa
      1979 - Mother Teresa
      1978 - Anwar al-Sadat, Menachem Begin
      1975 - Andrei Sakharov
1973 - Henry Kissinger, Le Duc Tho
      1971 - Willy Brandt
1964 - Martin Luther King Jr.
1963 - International Committee of the Red Cross, League of Red Cross Societies
      1962 - Linus Pauling
      1961 - Dag Hammarskjöld
      1953 - George C. Marshall
      1952 - Albert Schweitzer
      http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/index.html

      NOT YET...
Obama doesn't deserve to have his name mentioned along with any of these Awardees. Each of the above provided decades of tireless service to the peoples of the world, and typically the neediest, and the Nobel Prize was awarded to recognize such an extended and selfless giving.

How is Obama on par with Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, and, my God, Martin Luther King, Jr.???? He is not.

What has Obama done that is even remotely of the magnitude of the accomplishments of Albert Schweitzer, Elie Weisel, or Mother Teresa?
      Nothing of account.

Those on this blog who proudly boast that Obama is pre-eminently qualified for the Prize, or that he has "accomplished" so much, or that (oddly) that critics are "sore losers," have a breathtaking lack of global perspective.

Such comments reveal how biased, no-account lightweights elevate image over substance, and prefer short term flash over decades of tireless effort. They have no idea what World-Class effort and accomplishments really are.

Sore losers? What does that mean?

The losers are sore because they personally didn't receive the Prize?

The losers are sore because someone from their ancestral European homeland didn't win?

Or is, dare I say, the one calling others "losers" gloating in some myopically ethnocentric microcosm, Her black messiah "won", and those who disagree "lost"? Really?

So, what is the real motivation behind such blind allegiance?

Annie just can't stop spewing. Being a nurse, you'd think she'd be able to get something for that.

It's pure comedy how she accuses others of spouting rhetoric, then returns with NOTHING but the same. Annie attempts to pass herself off as an intelligent person, why doing nothing but tossing around insults, and showing the inability to answer her own most simple question. A question that has been answered here many times over with FACTS. If Annie wants to know what Obama has done to deserve the prize, she can simply read back through the blog, or *gasp* look it up herself in any of the publications she claims to read.

Instead, she'd rather attempt to bait people into an argument. She even attempts to spout off about other users' spelling, the classic focus of those who have no argument and nothing to bring to the table, when she is one of the worst writers on this site. That would be excusable if she weren't constantly passing herself off as a health care professional whose communication skills are of utmost import.

Annie is the classic poor loser, sour grapes, that can't handle the fact that time has passed her by.

If you are opposed to Obama's policies and you are white, you are a racist. If you are opposed to them and you are black, you are an Uncle Tom.

      Have I got that right?

So in other words, there can be no legitimate disagreement with his policies.

Is this really the tack his supporters want to take?
