    The best side businesses

Getty ImagesGetty ImagesEarlier this week I wrote about how to find the perfect part-time work to fit your life and I recommended considering something entrepreneurial rather than a job since it would provide more flexibility. And as if the blogosphere were listening, soon after that, I discovered this excellent post, 50 Side Businesses You Can Start on Your Own, by Trent Lamm, the author of 365 Ways to Live on the Cheap. (Actually, Lifehacker discovered it first.)

Clearly, Trent is a man who likes lists.

And I like this list for several reasons. Many of his ideas are the kinds of businesses that grow out of hobbies (e.g. antique refurbishment, auto detailing, cake decorating), and if you're working on a side business, you'll dedicate more time to it if it dovetails with your natural interests. Also, many of these ideas have low or no start-up costs, which makes them fairly low-risk. Finally, they are the kinds of businesses that can start out as experiments and expand into something bigger.

Check out the list for yourself. Do you have a successful side business that works well in your life, a side business that bloomed into a full-time career, or side business idea that Trent left out?

I bake pastries for special occasions and making hemp jewelry to earn a little extra each month. Since I travel a lot for a living, my friends are begging me to do a site on the travel life and how to save money while being a tourist.

I've come up with the greatest hot salsa recipe, and all of my friends say I should be selling it,but when I looked into all the legal
stuff that's attached to it I wonder.I know it could be a great side business.

What are folks feeling about supporting green products/energy, usually startup costs for green products are higher and can pay back in a year or two, are people really inclined to pay for this ,especially in this economy.

Marty T: try a couple of AA meetings. They have a Johns Hopkins Clinic questionaire you can answer to find out if you are or aren't an alcoholic. Good luck.

Before starting any side business, check with your local, county and state government for any needed licenses and what are the regulations you must follow, zoning concerns, will your home pass an inspection by the state? your insurance company, your family to see if they are willing to help and they understand the additional loss of your time with them, be sure you are going to make money, will you need an accountant to help with the additional tax requirements? Can you afford the start up costs, both in dollars and in time? How comfortable are you walking up to or into a business to sell your products? Can you do web design? Can you afford to be sued? If you lose the suit will you lose your home? starting a side business takes as much time, physical effort, thought and money as starting a full time business.

I like this list. People are definitely figuring out new ways to make money! I've always had fun stories to tell my married girlfriends. I kept hearing 'you should be a comedian' but I just didn't know how to get started and didn't have the nerve. Blogging? That I can do!! I'm a bit of a serial dater - I would describe my blog as Sex And The City meets Larry David's (creator of Senfield!) Curb Your Enthusiasm. So, yes...I made fun of myself ;) Check it out
