Vodka: Unexpected eco-household uses for my favorite spirit

Vodka is widely enjoyed as one of the world's most popular spirits. But there is more than meets the eye. Vodka is not just to mix with tonic, juice or seltzer. It is one of the most versatile spirits in existence.

Why would you want to do anything else with vodka but drink it? Vodka has a long history of use as medicine. More interestingly, it is also versatile to use for a variety of purposes that is not only effective, but also less toxic than a lot of the products you currently use.

    Treating Poison Ivy:

Imagine you're enjoying the outdoors when you suddenly encounter poison ivy, oak or sumac. It can lead to an uncomfortable and unattractive rash that can last quite a while. And here is the bad news - poison ivy is becoming more rampant as a result of global warming.

It is said that if you pour vodka immediately onto your skin after an encounter with the urushiol oil, the chemical that creates the rash on your skin, the breakout will be contained.

It might have to be 100 proof to work, however. An alternative is rubbing alcohol.

    Freshen Laundry:

I love clean laundry. Believe it or not, vodka can keep your clothes smelling fresher! Simply put vodka in a sprayer and spritz your clothes with it. Hang to dry in a airy location. Why does it smell fresher? Because vodka kills odor-causing bacteria. And as we all know, vodka leaves no smell on your breath and likewise it leaves absolutely no scent on your clothes when they dry.

You might want to spot test on one of your garments just to be safe.

    Shine Your Fixtures:

Instead of using Windex, try spraying your chrome, glass and porcelain fixtures with vodka. It will leave them sparkly clean. Simply moisten a soft, clean cloth with vodka, then clean away.

    Preserve Flowers:

Whenever I get a floral arrangement from a special someone on Valentine's Day or my birthday, I put a few drops of vodka and some sugar to the water in my vase. It keeps the flowers fresher longer so I can enjoy them in my house. You must change out the mixture with fresh ingredients daily.

    Repel Insects:

When I am eating a serene dinner outside in the country with friends, the only thing that ruins my meals are bug bites. But I hate wearing traditional bug sprays after reports of how DEET is so toxic to the environment and who knows what its true effects are! Vodka can kill those annoying insects. Simply pour some in a spray bottle and squirt on them directly or on yourself.

    Clean Away Mold:

Mold is every household's biggest fear. If you see or smell (usually like Clorox) signs of mold, be ware. It spreads quite quickly and can severely contaminate your indoor air quality.

Instead of using harsh chemical sprays, try filling a spray bottle with some vodka. No need to use top-shelf vodka brands here. Spray directly on the mold, then let sit for 15 minutes. Scrub away with an old toothbrush or scrubber.

You can make your own body spray with vodka. Get an empty perfume bottle, fill 1/3 of it with 100 proof vodka, 2/3 of it with distilled water, add a few drops of pure essential oils, shake it, and spray! :)

If you use good essential oils, they will never give your a headache when you smell this perfume.

Cheap vodka. ;) It's there a few shelves closer to the floor and quite a few dollars less.

And thanks to everyone who focused on the cost of vodka rather than the interesting alternative uses. Deeply amusing.

If your little one or even you, gets a finger caught in a drawer or door, soak some gauze in vodka and wrap around the finger. Works very well.

Great it's eco friendly... But more importantly is my sanity. I am not using my expensive Vodka as a cleaning product... Maybe we should just drink vodka be happy while we are cleaning. What a novel concept.

vinegar and baking soda are also non-toxic cleaners and inexspensive. I have a bottle of cheap vodka that I use for bug spray and I have to hide it to keep people from drinking it.

FYI, vodka DOES smell. A cop told me so... I found that vinager works just as well for cleaning and laundry. It leaves no smell on your clothes and they are really soft. Great alternative for perfumed softener if you suffer from exzema.

Noooo....the Grey Goose stays in the freezer until I need it. The only thing you should be mixing vodka with is orange juice, cranberry juice or pom juice. After a couple of drinks who cares how streaky the mirror is, you won't be able to focus enough to care! LOL...

I'm not wasting my vodka on cleaning the house! Are you nuts? I hang my clothes on the line, outside where they belong! Want fresh smelling clothes, or sheets, or jeans? Hang them outside! Leave my vodka out of this!!!!
