9 extremely simple and easy tips to take stress out of your day

When I was little, I was always puzzled by the maxim, "A stitch in time saves nine." I couldn't figure out what that meant. Finally, light dawned: a single stitch, made in good time, saves the trouble of making nine stitches later. In other words, a little effort now saves a lot of effort later.

That notion underlies several of the tips below. The other notion: when you have a reasonable amount of energy, life feels a lot less stressful.

    1. Keep some cash in the house.
    2. Never let your car's gas level fall into the "empty" zone.
    3. Have Advil (or whatever) at hand at all times.
    4. Put your keys away in the same place every day.
    5. Turn out the light as soon as you're sleepy.
    6. Walk around the block.
    7. Take ten minutes before bed to tidy up.
    8. If you have to pack a lunch for anyone, get it ready the night before.
    9. Have at least one good friend who lives in the neighborhood.

Samuel Johnson pointed out that "To live in perpetual want of little things is a state, not indeed of torture, but of constant vexation." By making the effort to stay on top of the little things, you can keep the vexation to a minimum.

Nice - If walking around the block isn't enough exercise, try what I do - http://www.youtube.com/QFEGuy - I'm 63 and in the best shape of my life. I do it every day not becuase I'm a fitness fanatic but because it's fun, which I never expected when I started at 55 - but you gotta do it to music. And I'm not selling anything, just casting my bread on the waters by trying to show people that exercising to feel good really is different.

Those are great ideas. Taking the time to be "proactive" ultimately takes less time than what it takes when you have to be "reactive".

You've got it completely upside down. No matter how hard you try, you can't control the world enough to avoid stress. It is how you handle the stress that matters.

Case in point, trying to avoid being on Empty won't work, because you're still going to stress at some level on the dial. Oh, no, I'm at 1/2! I have to fill up soon to avoid getting too low! However, someone who knows that there's always a gas station won't care if the little orange light comes on. You can always toss $5 in and get home... no big deal. I can't count the number of times my reminder light comes on. I don't care. I've still got at least 100mi at that point.

The people I've known (my cousin & sister are the worst!) who try to do all the things you suggest are the people I've known who are the most high strung. Chill out.

I couldn't agree more...it is the little things that cause me the most grief on a daily basis. I find that when I put in effort on the front end of things (chores, meals, laundry, etc) then it goes a lot smoother and I don't slip into feeling overwhelmed.

Looking at Jada Pinkett Smith in that "Hawthorne" ad is stressing me out!

Lay out or at least double check that what you're planning to wear tomorrow is clean and where you think it is.

Look... Legalize pot, tax the brownies, tax the seeds, tax the cute little packages that some idiot will try to sell it in, and stop wasting so much on so much else... Get wasted so it counts..... Stress will go away and the tax revenues will go up at the same time....

My Daddy would add - drink a glass of warm water upon rising. (no explanation needed)
