    How to Save Time Anywhere

    By Kimberly Fusaro

There are some errands (say, a visit to the DMV) that everyone dreads-and rightfully so. As anyone who's spent a lunch hour at the post office knows, it's easy to lose an afternoon trying to cross the simplest things off your to-do list. And even enjoyable tasks, like a trip to the movie theater or hair salon, often take two or three times the amount of energy they should. But you don't have to waste countless hours sitting in a waiting room or standing in line. Follow our expert tips for streamlining your days-and you might even find you have time to spare.

    Doctor's Office

Request the first appointment of the morning. Since phone calls and last-minute visits will throw off a doctor's day from the get-go, you should try to see her before she's fallen too far behind. Bear in mind that you may still spend some time in the waiting room, though, and plan ahead: Pack thank-you cards that you've fallen behind on, suggests lifestyle expert Christine Louise Hohlbaum, author of The Power of Slow. All caught up on your correspondence? Bring a folder with torn-out magazine articles that you've been meaning to read. Photo by Shutterstock.

    DMV

Do your homework before you make the trip: Visit the DMV's website in advance. In some states, you can take care of simple tasks, such as renewing your license, online. Even if you have to go in person, you may be able to download forms ahead of time. While you're on the site, click the "locations" link; smaller facilities may have faster-moving lines than those that handle every municipal task. Skip any office during peak hours, like lunchtime. Before you go, download an audio book or job-related podcast to help pass the time, suggests Hohlbaum. Photo by Shutterstock.

    Movie Theater

Skip the theater on a movie's opening weekend, says Stephanie Vozza, author of Five Minute Mom's Club. You'll spend more time in line and may still wind up with a crummy seat-even if you arrive well in advance. If your local theater allows it, buy tickets a few hours (or days) ahead of time. Or check a site like Fandango; in many cities you can purchase and print tickets over the Internet and avoid the ticketing line altogether. Also consider bringing your own snacks, which will save you time and money. Photo by Stockbyte.

    Grocery Store

Start by choosing a non-busy time to shop. According to the Time Use Institute, the least busy days for most grocery stores are Monday and Tuesday. (Saturday is the busiest, followed by Friday and Sunday.) The busiest hour during the week is between 4 and 5 p.m., so plan your trip accordingly. Other timesaving tips from Vozza: Leave your kids at home, if possible. Bag your own groceries, so you can put items that go in the same cabinet together. If you run out of nonperishables, such as toothpaste, buy three or four times the amount you need and you won't have to restock for months. Photo by Shutterstock.

    Bank

Most households have Internet access, but only 40 percent take advantage of online bill pay, which is easier than ever, says Hohlbaum. Take half an hour to set up your accounts-the site will walk you through, step by step-and you can pay all your bills in one monthly sitting. For monthly payments that don't fluctuate (mortgage and insurance payments and the like), set up an automatic withdrawal plan. If you must go into a brick-and-mortar bank, spend your time in line practicing deep breathing: Breathe in for five counts and out for six; repeat often to calm frazzled nerves. Post Office

Don't be intimidated by the Automated Postal Machines, urges Vozza. These often stand unused while people wait in line, but they can handle most of the jobs you'd go to the counter for. Use them to send letters and packages (Parcel Post, Priority and Express) as well as certified mail. Many will also print standard and specialty stamps. If you're just shipping packages and you know their weight, you can print postage on your home printer and arrange for home pickup on the postal service's website, USPS.com. Hairdresser

Decide what time works best for you-if you go first thing in the morning, you'll likely have a shorter wait time-then make a standing appointment at that hour every three months, suggests Hohlbaum. This is one visit you shouldn't try to rush through. If your stylist feels like you're in a hurry to leave, she won't spend the time she needs and you'll wind up with a subpar cut. You also shouldn't try to multitask in your hairdresser's chair; taking phone calls or trying to sneak in a meal will slow her down. Photo by Shutterstock.

    Outlet Stores

If you want to be in and out-and don't want to battle crowds-Hohlbaum suggests hitting up outlet stores on a weekday afternoon. "Avoid long holiday weekends at all costs," she urges. Grab as much merchandise as you can without exceeding the dressing room limits; the fewer back-and-forth trips you make, the faster you'll be out of there. Bring along a girlfriend so she can fetch different sizes for you, then return the favor. Photo by Shutterstock.

Go to the DMV on Wednesdays, and never on Monday or Friday.

I don't mind waiting a little for my doctor (I bring a good book to read) because when I finally see him, he really takes the time to listen to me and address any issues I may have. If he falls behind, its probably because he's doing the same with his other patients. A caring doctor is worth the wait.

i think this article is catered toward rich and maybe stay at home mom/dad who have (well) good paying job spouses, so in short this article is for well off people who need not work on weekdays and afternoons. For most of us we actually take time off to go to DMV . thank goodness you only have to do that maybe once in your life unless you're a bad driver ;)

Wow, now tell me something I don't know. Like how to beat the d@mn line at the Social Security office when it services five, count 'em FIVE counties!!!

If you want to save time at the bank I have a tip as a teller. Take deposit and withdraw slips home. Fill them out before you get there. Then you can walk right up to the teller and be in and out, while other people who came in before you are still filling their slip out.

WOW these must really work. You must have saved so much time you decided to waste plenty of it by writing this rediculous article. Too bad I wasted my time reading it.

"Posted by Robbie H 19 hours ago The person who attacked Margaret and said he/she doesn't "care about her profit margin" is just a grumpy b---- . If you don't have the money to help out the theater, don't go. "

No, I DON'T care about the profit margin, as I said, when it is that obscene. It's not that I don't have the money, I'm just not that foolish. Did you complain when gas was $5 a gallon, or did you just say, "Oh, the little gas station people have to make money"? Businesses only charge what people are willing to pay. If they know you will pay $5 for a drink that costs them 75 cents. I'm not making that number up, here's the source of my info: http://money.blogs.time.com/2009/12/07/movie-theaters-make-85-profit-at-concession-stands/ Would you shop at a grocery store that marked up the food 85%? You're an idiot if you do.

I disagree on the Doctor's Office- at least at mine anyway. Several times I've made an 8:00am appointment and been taken back into a room right away only to sit there and wait forever for the doctor to come in and see me. I'm convinced that she doesn't even arrive at the office until 8:30am. I'd rather be scheduled for the last appointment of the day when I have nothing else going on afterward. That way I'm not POed AND an hour late to work.

RE: FANDANGO. My husband purchased tickets online for me and 4 of our 5 children. I thought is was a great idea because who wants to stand in luine with a bunch of antsy kids?! Well, it was great untill I read the paper he had to print out...Istill had to take the paper to the ticket window to get the actual tickets and there was a number on there to call in case the bar code didn't work. Thank goodness it worked, but it sure didn't save anytime.
By the way, sometimes Doctors get behind because people can't seem to get to the appoinment on time. I always get to my kids' Dr 10-15 minutes early, and get in within 5 minutes. Besides good Doctors are hard to find and some are worth the wait.
And to the writer of this blog, most of us can't take a day off to run errands, we have to squeeze them into a certain time frame...can I have your job writing a common sense blog?

Well, duhhh! "Go when it isn't too busy"! Why didn't everyone think of that? Oh, maybe because they have to work and stuff? Have a life? Can I get a job writing these pearls of wisdom?

Go to the DMV/MVA at the END of the workday. They move faster because they want to go home.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  1 year 11 months ago
I think a better suggestion for the doctor's office is to find one who isn't so busy that she isn't able to get you in on time. They really are out there!

Which movie theaters allow you to bring your own snacks? Sure, you can sneak some smaller things in, but I'm curious- are there theaters that actually allow it?

      Just wait your turn....
    • Tom  •  1 year 11 months ago
"Advance Planning"??? I have never heard of "Delayed Planning" Planning indicates that it is done in advance. Just like the root word for Decadent is DECAY! Rotten Chocolate! Who wants to eat that? And "Old Adage", the word adage means OLD SAYING so and old adage is a really old old saying?
    • Hank  •  1 year 11 months ago
This is really what we need more of is how to get more impacient. We are a society of I WANT THE GOLDEN TICKEN NOW DADDY. I think that we need to get back to we can wait our turn.

re: DMV - depending on what your task is, ask your AUTO INSURANCE AGENT if they can possibly handle the task for you. I was surprised to find out what my agent was able to do for me which saved a trip to the DMV's registration line.
    • DH  •  1 year 11 months ago
Blame this on peoples work schedule. If people didn't have to work long hours then maybe people wouldn't have to wait so long.
