We get tons of tips every week, but a recent e-mail from Dr. Craig Ziering, a hair restoration specialist, caught my eye! Here are Dr. Ziering's top six ways to avoid a summer hair disaster:
Drink Plenty of Water - Among the many benefits of drinking water, it is also nature's safest and best moisturizer for skin and hair.
Curtail the Cocktails - Before soaking up the sun with a summer cocktail, remember that alcohol dries out skin and hair. It's just one of many good reasons to avoid overindulging.
Keep Things Loose - Pull hair back in a loose ponytail using soft hair ties. Avoid metal clips and tight rubber bands which can put stress on hair and cause breakage, especially when hair is wet.

Apply Protective Sunscreen to Hair - UVA and UVB rays can damage hair, leading to split ends, breakage and loss of a healthy shine. Also, sunburn to the scalp harms hair follicles and can actually result in an embarrassing summer bald spot. *Dr. Ziering suggests using Phytoplage High Protection Sun Spray.
Use Leave-In Conditioner or Soak Hair with Tap Water - Doing this before swimming prevents chlorine and sea salt from harming the cuticle, leading to breakage and split ends.
Use a Wide-Toothed Comb for Wet Hair - Wet hair is especially fragile and can easily break or tear. A wide-toothed comb will reduce breakage - just toss one into the beach bag and be set for the summer.
