When a new baby comes along, two things become scarce. I'm not talking about sleep and sanity - although that may be true as well. I'm talking about time and money. Thankfully, we live in an age when technology can often come to the rescue. Many gadgets out there can save you time and/or money as you navigate the hazy world of new parenthood.
White Noise App
My daughter has been drifting off to sleep to the sound of white noise since she was born. Using white noise helps drown out background noise and re-create the peaceful environment of the womb, lulling babies into slumber, which can save you lots of time trying to get your newborn to go to sleep and stay asleep. We use a beautiful white noise machine that cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $50. What we could have been using all this time was a free white noise app on one of our phones.
Visitors, doctor appointments, emergency diaper shortages…life gets hectic when a new baby comes! Shared calendaring has been helpful for my husband and me to keep our schedules straight. Some calendaring systems also have space for to-do, meal, and shopping lists to keep everybody on the same page.
Many a night did my husband and I sleepily stumble out of bed for our new baby's middle-of-the-night feedings. If I'd had to wait for water to boil on the stove before I could warm my baby's bottle, I'm pretty sure both she and I would have gone insane. Thankfully, we had a bottle warmer, which quickly and uniformly heated her bottles. It could also be used for sanitizing pacifiers in a matter of minutes.
Wrap or Carrier
I can't tell you how much my life changed when I started putting my infant in a wrap. Talk about saving time! I no longer had to wait for her to be asleep in order to get things done around the house. With my hands free, I could do dishes while spending quality time with my little girl and provide stimulation for her as she participated in my daily activities.
Baby Tracking Apps
Looking back on the first few months of my daughter's life, it was a blur of schedules, tables, and charts. I was consumed by trying to figure out how often and at what times I could or should expect her to eat, sleep, and need a diaper change. New parents can save time by downloading an app that keeps track of all their babies' needs and functions in one place.
