Baltimore, like any big city, has it's fair share of outlaws and ruffians. No one knows that more than the men and women who serve the Baltimore Police Department. But one story making the rounds today sheds a bit of unusually cool light upon the more human aspects of being an inner-city cop. And it's making me and a whole lot of other folks smile.

The website Modifiedk9 recently ran a story based on a letter they received from Officer Dan Waskiewicz in which he told the site a pretty awesome story. It seems that not too long ago, Officer Waskiewicz responded to a call regarding what he described as "…a vicious dog chasing kids." Upon arriving at the scene he noticed people hollering out of their windows and so he followed the pit bull to see what it was up to.

Officer Waskiewicz, a self-proclaimed dog lover, then went against his partner's judgement and got the dog to approach him.

"The dog came over with it's tail between it's legs and panting. I grabbed my water bottle and the dog sat down next to me and began licking my pants. I started giving the dog water," he writes in his letter to Modifiedk9. With his initial concerns about the 'viciousness' of the dog eased, the officer got the dog into his squad car and he and his partner headed toward the pound in hopes that the homeless animal might just find a home somewhere.

Pretty cool, huh?

I mean let's face facts: in urban Baltimore, no one is going to flinch when a cop has to simply shoot a dog, especially a pitbull, when he's on duty.

But there's more to the story.

"Then I decided that I wanted to keep the dog, and spoke to the shelter about the steps to take to adopt it," Officer Waskiewicz said in his letter. "The dog was originally kept outside and was filthy, and now it just might have a new home."

Can you imagine that? You're a cop on a call for a dog people were petrified of, and you end up with a new best friend. How great is that?

I hope these two are together now.

Because they sure deserve to be.
