1. Pops of Pattern

"I typically try to use one pattern in each room that has all the colors in the room," designer Jay Jeffers says. "It's a great trick because in a bedroom it could be as big as a comforter or as small as a pillow." The centerpiece in this Sonoma bedroom is the 19th-century Italian headboard, upholstered in Osborne & Little's Tamara.

But how do you know when you have too many patterns? "It's like women and accessories. Put them all on, then take one off and you're good."

3. Sensuous Fabrics

Using lush fabrics can add to the sensuality and glamour of a room, such as in designer Amanda Nisbet'sNew York City apartment. Here, an ivory mohair headboard from Elitis, layers of curtains, Berber carpet, and a fuchsia velvet chair play up the theme. "The pink and ivory on the froufrou bed and the fabric on the slipper chairs seem fresh and soothing to me," she says.
