When the users set up their home networks, they get so excited and often forget about one very important thing - network security. This can cost you a lot of your time and nerves so it is better to do something as early as possible. When we talk about the network security we have to say that in this field the IP address 192.168.1.1 plays a vital role. It is used to access the configuration menu of your router where you can handle all security issues. In the next paragraphs you will see what you have to do to secure your network.

Default password - The default username and password are set in the factory and nearly all routers from the same manufacturer have the same username and password. So if someone knows your router brand, it will be easy to find the default login details and access your network. Therefore it is recommended to change the default password immediately.

SSID (Service Set Identifier) - This is another option you have to take care of in your router configuration menu. If someone knows your SSID it will be easier for that person to access your home network. So, make sure that SSID broadcast is off.

MAC Address Filtering - This option has to be enabled. It works best with wireless encryption, and you can be pretty sure that your network security is very good with these two.

Encryption - It is recommended to select the best encryption your router can offer. You can do this in the configuration settings. Most often, a WEP encryption is used. Just make sure to change the password every 2 weeks and use strong passwords made of numbers, small and capital letters and symbols.

Firewall - If your router comes with a built-in firewall it is recommended to turn it on. This can be easily done in the configuration menu of your router. This will drastically improve your home network security.

As you can see, there are just a few things you have to do in order to secure your home network. You have to be aware that there are people who try to access other people's networks just for fun, because they believe they will be great hackers one day. The fact is that most of them don't know how to deal with a secured network, so it is always better to make the changes we have just suggested, than be sorry later when you try to fix things up.
