Spring Decorating Trends to Trash and to Try

Out with the winter wreaths and in with the pastel-colored eggs, right? Not so fast. According to the latest Zillow Digs Home Design Trend Report, leading designers are taking a less-is-more approach to decorating this spring.

Marc Thee, co-founder and design principal of Florida-based Marc-Michaels Interior Design Inc., says he’s actually started to loathe decorative objects that serve no purpose.

“I put my Miami house on the market and had to go through and take away things I loved,” he says. “But after I took out some of my stuff, the house looked so fresh, so new, so light and airy.”

For a spring-clean look in your home right now, here are three trends to trash, along with a few items you’ll definitely want to hang on to this season.

Ditch heavy drapes. Embrace sheer metallics. Metallics were a big trend in winter, and they’re only going to gain popularity this spring. Thee says that while the trend was previously limited to lamps and accessories, metallics are now seen in window sheers and weaves in rugs and fabrics.

The best way to get to the look for spring is to keep metallic elements light and bright. “Heavy window treatments are outdated, but a sexy, metallic sheer is really popular this spring,” he shares.

Ditch colored towels and candles. Embrace white.  “They are fine for the pool house or cabana bathroom," Thee says of brightly colored towels, "but when it comes to the master bath or guest bath, always choose white towels. A white towel brings the feeling of a spa experience to any bath.”

The same goes for candles. Instead of colored, woodsy-scented candles, he suggests filling glass cylinders of varying heights with white votives or big, cut leaves from your yard.

“I believe in going into your garden,” he adds. “There’s nothing more beautiful than cherry blossoms or big, oversized leaves in a tropical climate.”

Ditch Pastel patterns. Embrace stone-washed solids.

You don’t have to let go of the classic, Easter-egg color palette completely, but Thee says you should give it a bit more of a grown-up spin.

“Take that Easter-egg lavender and gray it up,” he said. “Stone-washed colors are so wonderful," adding that he loves when stone-washed lavender, buttery yellow, and seaglass green are used together, but he suggests going for solids over patterns.

“Colors are very clear in spring,” he said. “Less pattern is more spring-like.”
