3 Tips for a Happy Thanksgiving

We always find that our happiest holiday memories come from those times when everyone feels comfortable, no matter whether they're from out of town or just down the street. In any setting - an outdoor porch, fireside in the den, or a card table set up in a corner - the goal is simple: make your guests feel welcome in your home.

Here's our top three tips for a successful and memorable Thanksgiving day. Hostesses, take note!

1. Let the Cocktails Flow: Set up self-service cocktails like soft drinks, wine, and beer in a spot that will not interfere with last-minute traffic between the kitchen and dining room. Also consider providing hot drinks for those in cold-weather areas.

2. Provide Appetizers: Light snacks like spiced nuts or farmstead cheeses also allow guests to help themselves while you add the finishing touches to dinner.

3. Keep Guests Warm: Offer a selection of shawls or throw blankets (Overstock.com has the best ones) for cool weather or large, cozy floor pillows (Crate & Barrel have some for $20!) for comfortable fireside entertaining. Provide sufficient chairs: Guests, such as grandparents, who prefer to be seated will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
