Trusty wikipedia defines a catfight as an altercation between two women, typically involving scratching, hair-pulling, shirt-shredding, insulting each other verbally or being otherwise nasty to each other usually over men. Rawrrr! But which unsuspecting lady has been sharpening her claws? Last week everyone's favorite heiress, Paris Hilton, went on the radio and trashed long-term "friend" Kim Kardashian saying, "I would not want [Kim's butt], it's gross! It reminds me of cottage cheese inside a big trash bag." Hiss! Recognizing the magnitude of her errors, Paris confessed to In Touch, "I felt really bad afterward, so I contacted Kim and apologized. It was a silly thing to say. Kim's hot!"

We know cats have nine lives, but vicious Paris is a few feline feuds shy of using hers up! While handsome Hollywood men may serve as terrific bait, it usually only takes a healthy dose of competition for these ladies to treat each other like a scratching post.

Which celebs deserve a time out in the litter box? Here are Shine's picks for the Top 5 catfights in Hollywood.

1. Queens fight for their throne: Madonna vs. Elton John
This fight goes back to 2004 when Elton dissed the Queen of Pop at an award show saying, "Anyone who lip-syncs in public on stage when you pay $134 to see them should be shot. That's me off her...Christmas card list," he added. "But do I give a toss? No." Madonna went on a talk show and made a crack about his wig flying off in the wind, but then paused to take the high road saying, "I'm not going to go there. Elton is one of my closest friends." This past winter though, Madonna maybe-not-so-coincidentally threw a huge bash in an attempt to upstage Elton's infamous Oscar Party. Ohhh no she didn't!

2. You Give Love a Bad Name: Heather Locklear vs. Denise Richards
When 80s-turned-90s blonde TV icon Heather Locklear and Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora were having marital problems, best friend Denise Richards consoled her with the whole, "You're too good for him -- give him the boot!" routine. Of course, once their divorce was finalized, pictures emerged of Richie and Denise making out on a balcony. The backstabber! Too bad Richie dumped Denise a few weeks later. Karma's a beeyotch.

3. A big voice and a big mouth get Dirrty: Christina Aguilera vs. Kelly Osbourne

Claws were out at the MTV Europe Awards 2003 when Christina absolutely refused to walk the red carpet if guest VJ Osbourne was present. Kelly's rebuttal? Saying Aguilera's music was crap and calling her a cow. Later on the show, a skit was aired of Christina shooting at a picture of her rival. "If Christina Aguilera has to resort to throwing darts at my head after everything she's achieved and everything she's done, then she's a really sad, sorry person," said Kelly. Had enough? Nope?! Aguilera fought back again: "Honey, if you can di----- out, you've got to learn how to take it back." The verdict: it's a draw.

4. The writing's on the wall: Lindsay Lohan vs. Scarlett Johansson
It seems like every woman in Hollywood has taken a bite out of Jared Leto, but Lindsay Lohan had about enough of his sea of exes. One night in 2006 at NYC bar the Dark Room, she asked to borrow a sharpie and went into the bathroom. The classy phrase that was written on the wall when she exited: "Scarlett is a bloody c--t." What is this, her high school burn book?

Meanwhile, Scarlett may act like she's above such actions, but take a look at her latest sound bite in Spin magazine and you be the judge: "I have no relationship with either [Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton], even as far as my lifestyle or the music I listen to. They probably made music that fits with their lifestyle -- 'Wouldn't it be great if I were dancing to my own song in 'da club'? But my album is more suited to my lifestyle. I live a very low-key life." Wow, so low-key she doesn't even need to hate on her peers!

5. Friendships and fueds as fake as their extensions: Paris Hilton vs. Nicole Richie
These childhood friends turned reality show BFFs lives became not-so-simple after a public friendship breakup in 2005 and rumors swirled about mutual jealousy over rising fame. So what really went down? One tidbit we heard was that Nicole, livid about Paris being asked to host SNL solo, hosted a viewing party and aired the heiresses sextape instead. Ouch! While that sounds like never forgive action, the girls are somehow friends again. Perhaps enough back-and-forth insult slinging evened the score.

Have you ever gotten into a catfight? How far is too far to forgive and forget?
