Take a Cue from Grandma and Add This Little Luxury to Your Life

Image: eAlisa/VeerLike many mothers, I'm not one to spend a whole lot of time on my beauty routine. A quick glance at my roots is evidence enough to prove it. But in the late fall I won a raffle prize at a fundraiser to a local salon for a month's membership in their Blow Dry Club. What the heck was that I wondered at the time? But now that I've given it a go, I'm hooked, and it's actually not that surprising as salons that only do blowouts have been popping up in droves across the country.

Remember how your grandmother used to go to the salon once a week to have her hair washed and blown out? It seems as more women started working and burning the candle at both ends to take care of their house, kids, and work that they stopped this habit. But these blow dry only salons are creating a resurgence of it. The salon that I go to is a full service salon that offers a Blow Dry Club. As it's a resort area, in the "off" season I can get four wash and blow dries for $50 per month. In the "on" season, the price goes up to $80 per month. The blow dry salons in major cities do charge, but you should be able to find a spot that will do it for less if you aren't in a major metropolitan area. And you certainly don't need to look for a "club" but just price out what your local salons charge for a wash and blow dry.

As I mentioned, I'm not one to go all out on the beauty treatments, but once a week for 45 minutes I get to take a break, get a little head massage, and a proper blowout (I just can't seem to achieve the same look on my own) that lasts a few days, and all for $12.50 a week. Many of us spend more than that on coffee in three days. It's not a huge time commitment (even for me, the queen of "I don't have the time!") and it's an inexpensive thing that I can do for myself. I feel great afterwards, and I try to plan them on days when I've got dinner plans or have other social obligations so that I remove the "Ugh, what am I going to do with my hair?" factor from my getting ready routine.
