When Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog filmed a video with high school athletes helping promote the You Can Play project, history was made. The NHL is now the first professional sports league in North America to have each of its teams represented by members who voice their support for the LGBT community.

"Having full and, more importantly, ongoing participation from the NHL is a milestone for acceptance of all athletes at every level of play and sport," said Wade Davis, executive director of You Can Play. "Every major men's sports league has been represented in a You Can Play video, and now every team in one of the world's premiere sports leagues has actively participated."

"This support from professional leagues has a positive impact in locker rooms and anywhere sports are played," he added.

You Can Play's mission, as stated on the project's website, is to ensure "equality, respect and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation" and "guarantee that athletes are given a fair opportunity to compete, judged by other athletes and fans alike, only by what they contribute to the sport or their team's success."

The project hopes their efforts make gay athletes' sexuality a non-issue in the locker room and while playing the game. See what other athletes are showing their support of LGBT players at You Can Play's website.
