I'm Gaining Weight And Losing Confidence!

Q: "I've been gaining weight for the past couple months or so after my doctor told me I'd be healthier if I did, but it's taking a huge toll on my self-esteem. I know it's the right thing to do, but I've now gained enough weight that most of my clothes don't fit me anymore. When I look in the mirror, I don't like what I see. How can I continue to do what's healthy for my body without totally ruining my self confidence?"

A: Kendall - It sounds like you were told to gain weight for medical reasons (not sure of the details) but when a doctor gives us an instruction like that - it's wise to listen. When you have a growing, maturing body (*which you do at 14) it's incredibly important to nourish it so it can handle all the tasks it needs to handle. I know that it can be a real bummer and quite a shock to find you don't fit into your clothes - but please try not to let it send you in a body spiral - you are right in that you are taking care of yourself and that should come first. Did the doc give you an OK to exercise - because a brisk walk or a nice swim may help combat some of the body blues you are feeling as you put on a few pounds. I know everyone's money is tight but if you can save your allowance or ask your parents to help you buy a few things in a size that feels comfortable for you right now - that will help a ton with your self-confidence. But in the end remember you are helping your body grow healthfully, you are taking care of yourself physically, and you can't lose sight of who you are on the inside! - Jess Weiner
