Knowing Your Neighbors!

A recent survey from a market research group polled their members with the following question "Do you wish you knew your neighbors better?" Nearly 70% answered that they did! This poll was open to the entire research group, so it wasn't a scientific poll. Even so, it is probably safe to assume that the vast majority of us would like to know their neighbors better.

What are some of the barriers to knowing our neighbors? Scheduling differences are probably responsible for some, and then too, some people find it difficult to say "hi" introduce them and start a conversation, thereby opening the door to forging a relationship.

There are many benefits to knowing your neighborhood information. First, it makes it easy to spot someone who doesn't live in the neighborhood. They might be looking for someone that lives in the area, and providing some assistance would probably be very welcome! Maybe they are considering a move into the neighborhood. What a great impression they'd have if someone said "hello!" Then, there is the neighborhood safety aspect. If an unfamiliar person is in the neighborhood with some nefarious purpose in mind, knowing that someone saw them, and could potentially have noted a description and license plate, just might be enough to send them elsewhere.

Another benefit is that if you go out of town and you've built a relationship with your neighbors, you have people right around your home that might be willing to look after your pets, water the plants and in general keep an eye on your home, making your home - and your neighborhood - safer.
