NFL Draftee Keeps 12-Year Promise to His Mother

NFL draft hopeful Teddy Bridgewater is being touted as the #1 pick in Thursday's NFL draft, but the 21-year-old's week is already filled with good news. On Monday, the athlete was able to fulfill a promise he made to his mother over a decade ago, and her reaction was priceless.

Bridgewater, a star quarterback at the University of Louisville, was raised by his mother, Rose Murphy. An educator in the Miami-Dade County public school district, Murphy raised her son while battling and eventually beating breast cancer.

Bridgewater appreciated everything his mother did for him while struggling through this difficult time, and he's known since he was 9 years old how he wanted to repay her.

"When I make it to the NFL, I'm going to buy you a pink Cadillac Escalade with pink rims," he recalled saying when he was in the third grade. The pink color is particularly important to Murphy, since it's the color associated with breast cancer awareness.

This sweet mother and son story caught the attention of filmmaker Spike Lee, who directed a short documentary "A #Promise2Rose" about Teddy and Rose's relationship.

"My mom is my best friend," Bridgewater says in Lee's documentary. "She's always been there for me."

The film follows Bridgewater's days from peewee football to becoming a star player in college. Lee also speaks with his brothers and sisters, and the difficulty of dealing with Murphy's cancer diagnosis and years of treatment.

The doc ends with the heartwarming moment when Bridgewater makes good on his promise and presents his mother with her brand new, bright pink car.

On Monday, May 5, after celebrating a birthday lunch -- which included an interview with Robin Roberts from "Good Morning America's" -- Teddy took his mother outside, where a pink Escalade was parked.

"It was just amazing. I was in awe. I was like, 'Oh my God,'" Murphy said today on "GMA." "It was a long time coming and just to see it, I was in awe."
