VIDEO: How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

By Charleen Gonzalez for Shine Latina

Regularly cleaning your makeup brushes will help prevent breakouts and make the application process easier and more-refined. Cleaning them is easy, and you'll only need household products. Follow these steps and you'll be shine-free:

Start by wetting the brush hair with slightly warm water. You don't want the water to be hot because it can ruin the brush hairs. Make sure to only wet the bristles of the brush and not the ferrule holding the hairs into the handle of the brush. Getting water into the ferrule will dissolve the adhesives and ruin your brush

Next, grab a dab of shampoo and massage it into the bristles. Rinse and repeat the process until the water runs clear. The last step is to lay the brushes flat on a paper towel. Never allow the brushes to dry upright in a container as the leftover water will seep into the ferrule and un-glue it.

It takes around 12 hours for the bristles to dry completely, so it's best to do this process at night. In between deep cleanings, you could use a brush-cleaner spray after every use and wipe on a tissue. A good rule of thumb is to deep clean your brushes at least once a month, but I recommend doing it at least once a week if you are prone to acne flare-ups.
