VIDEO: Incorporate SPF into Your Makeup Routine

By Charleen Gonzalez for Shine Latina

So many makeup companies are blending sunscreen into their products, so it's easier than ever to integrate SPF into your makeup routine. Because wrinkles are largely caused by sun exposure, and too much vitamin D can cause skin cancer on top of that, you need to protect your skin whenever you go outdoors.

Here are some products that will keep you guarded during the day:

Daily sunscreen

The best practice is to apply a layer of sunscreen under your foundation everyday. My favorite is Clinique's Super City Block Oil-Free Daily Face Protector Broad Spectrum 40 SPF, $22. It's a weightless formula that includes broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection, as well as antioxidant ingredients, which protect against environmental damage.

Apply to your face and neck and use as a primer foundation or by itself. I love that the formula works well with my oily skin type and doesn't make me look greasy.

Something to keep in mind: If you're going to be photographed, skip foundation or sunscreen that has a physical SPF. It can make you look pasty-white in pictures. For these events, opt for a chemical SPF. The difference is technical, but here is my chemical recommendation: 3LAB 'Perfect' Sunscreen SPF 55 PA+++, $40.

Primer
Hourglass and Smashbox offer foundation primers with added SPF. The Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer with SPF 15, $18, is water-resistant and helps with oil control. Smashbox's Photo Finish Foundation Primer with SPF 20 With Dermaxyl™ Complex, $42, has a higher SPF and contains ingredients to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

But I love using Urban Decay's Naked Skin Beauty Balm with SPF 20, $34, which instantly blurs imperfections and doubles as a moisturizer and primer.

Foundation and powder
It's almost hard to get foundation without SPF. My go-to is Tarte's Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation with SPF 15, $38. I like to boost the SPF coverage with Tarte's Provocateur Powder with SPF 8, $30. BareMinerals also includes sun protection in their mineral Matte Foundation with Broad Spectrum SPF 15, $27.
