Which candidate won the first presidential debate?

The debate went on as scheduled Friday night, despite John McCain's suggestion that they put it off to deal with the current economic crisis. After watching nearly two hours of back-and-forth questioning, plus a few hours of pundit commentary, I feel that with no defining moment or major blow to either candidate, the first debate was pretty evenly matched.

McCain, who has recently been trailing in the polls, tried to make Obama seem naive and in over his head concerning world affairs. Points to McCain for drilling in his own expertise with the constant use of phrases like, "he (Barack) doesn't understand" or "he doesn't get it." His constant references to events from decades past did, however, serve as a reminder to his age.

Barack Obama's goal was to look confident and competent in regard to his knowledge on national security and foreign policy, areas where McCain has greater experience. Mission accomplished. Bonus points for repeating the phrase, "when I'm president I will..." in contrast to McCain's less-certain lead-in, "the next president must..." throughout the debate.

One debate technique I also took note of: Obama often acknowledged points where he felt McCain was correct and then showed how their two plans differ. McCain was very specific to not illustrate any common ground or where Obama may have said something he agreed with. While Obama comes off as very diplomatic, does McCain end up looking more powerful?

Did you think a clear winner emerged? What do you want to see happen in the next debate?
