Woman Prepares for Double Mastectomy by Having a Dance Party in the Operating Room

Surgery can be a scary thing, and a double mastectomy can be terrifying for a woman to go through, but this one patient made the most out of her situation by turning to her love of dance.

Deborah Cohan decided to go into her surgery to have both breasts removed with joy, not fear. Wearing her hospital gown, the 44-year-old broke it down in a six-minute dance party in the operating room at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco. The patient and her surgical and anesthesia teams showed off their slick moves while dancing to Beyoncé's "Get Me Bodied."

"I found a lump this past September," Deborah tells us. "They did a biopsy and I found out September 23 that I had invasive cancer. I spent some time figuring out what the best method was for me, and being open to everything, and I was dancing a lot during that time."

Deborah is a physician and an OBGYN who cares for patients with HIV. She's always loved to dance, and recently incorporated it into her job. "I'm interested in teaching others how to move so that they can relate better to their patients," she says. "Using dance techniques to help providers so they can interact with patients' bodies in a more gentle, fluid way."

"Dance is this core piece of me and I thought that it would be amazing to do," she says of her pre-surgery dance party. "I've always wanted to be in a flash mob and I wanted to do it in the OR with the people who are about to perform surgery on me, so we all have this great experience together."

You'll be happy to know that Deborah's surgery was a success, and she's in good spirits. She's already walking, and we're sure she'll be back to dancing any day now!
