Beauty Guru: 4 Beauty Mistakes You Shouldn't Make Past Age 25

We're all guilty of beauty mistakes, but there comes a time when you should know better. Are you guilty of these four beauty mistakes?

Beauty Mistake #1: Using Teen Acne Products for Your Adult Acne

Fact: Young skin produces far more oil than adult skin. For that reason, acne products that target the teen crowd are far too harsh for adult skin and can result in a severe case of adult acne. Sometimes all it takes to nix unsightly blemishes is switching up your skincare routine. If you're over 25, opt for gentle products with a lower concentration of Salicylic acid. Additionally, only wash your face once or twice a day. I wash at night, moisturize and then rinse my face in the morning before applying makeup.

Beauty Mistake #2: Skipping Your Moisturizer

Speaking of washing your face and moisturizing, you should always remember to apply a face, eye and neck cream/serum/lotion at night. It's also smart to apply lotion to the rest of your body to help keep skin soft and supple. Keep in mind that, as you get older, your skin will make less and less oil. You'll need to make up for that loss of naturally created moisture with products.

Beauty Mistake #3: Over-Dyeing Your Hair

Listen, I get that dyeing hair is fun. I went through an experimental phase where I tried red for a few weeks, then platinum blonde, then ashy blonde and back to red with strawberry highlights. It's nice to change things up on the regular. Unfortunately, dyeing too much can wreak serious havoc on your tresses, leaving you with thirsty, crispy hair that's not very pretty to look at -- or touch, for that matter.

Your best bet is to meet with a hair stylist -- particularly one who specializes in hair color -- and come up with a plan of action. Your stylist can talk you through the best color(s) for your skin tone and help you reach your "hair goals," so to speak. It's important to understand what kind of upkeep is involved with your hair color, as well.

Beauty Mistake #4: Following All The Rules

Don't forget to be yourself when it comes to makeup. It's one thing to follow all the rules and wear the right products when doing so means healthy hair and skin. It's another thing, however, to forget to have fun. If you feel like wearing green eyeshadow to the bar, do it. If you're craving a bright red lip for your coffee date, apply away. Experiment, have fun, and always be yourself!
