Blush should be part of your daily makeup routine, regardless of the season. Blush can enhance a sun-kissed complexion, or add some color to an otherwise pale complexion in the dead of winter. Selecting the perfect blush is quite challenging; there are creams, powders and gels, and a plethora of colors to decide on.
There are two critical factors when selecting your perfect blush: the first is recognizing your skin type, i.e. oily, dry, or combination, and second is identifying your skin tone, i.e. fair, medium, or dark.
Types of Blushes
Cream blushes are oil-free and best for dry and mature skin. They are generally applied with the fingertips and give a precise result. Cream blushes can also be applied with a makeup sponge. Stick blushes are considered a cream blush, but you have less control in the application process.
Fair skin (sun burns easily, freckles, porcelain complexion) - consider a light pink or peach
Medium skin tone - consider blushes with a hint of brown or rich shades, such as peach, dusty rose, cranberry
Olive or Asian skin tone usually yellow undertones) - warm pinks and plums
Sun-tanned skin - orange, apricot and coral
Dark skin tones - bronze, apricot, berry colors
Black skin - apricot, magenta, gold blush, ruby color. Avoid bright pinks.
While I understand the above is pretty general, it is a good starting point. It's time to start experimenting!
Lastly, blush can also be used to elongate a round face. To apply this technique, you will need to purchase a blush palette that enhances your skin tone. The palette should consist of a dark color, medium color and light color. First apply the darkest tone just below the check bones and blend out, but do not go past the corner of the outer eye. Secondly, apply the medium shade and blend all of the way to the temple. Lastly, use the lightest color and highlight the check bones. This technique will give the appearance of a thinner face and elongate the face.
