Beauty Guru: Guide to Switching Your Makeup from Summer to Fall

Although it's sad to say goodbye to summer styles and sunny makeup colors, I always love the transition to fall color and fashion. I love leaving behind the bright pinks and pastels in favor of richer, darker hues, such as deep purple, dark brown, and black. Burgundy is a terrific fall color, as is a deep, dark green. What can you keep from summer to fall? What should you leave behind in favor of something new? Here are a few transitional ideas for you.

Skin care. Due to my oily skin, my skin care basically stays the same all year round. Occasionally, as the temperatures start to fall and the use of artificial heat sources dry my skin out a little bit, I'll add in an oil-free moisturizer. But otherwise, I stick to my trusty Neutrogena Acne Stress Control products. They keep the oil -- and the blemishes -- at bay.

Foundation and concealer. I do like to add in a little bit more foundation and concealer in the cooler months. It helps hide those dark under-eye circles I get from fall allergies.

Powder. I rarely use powder in the summer, because it just turns into a big mess on my oily skin, especially if I'm going to be in the hot, summer sun; however, this isn't a problem in the cooler fall air. I love the flawless finish that comes from a light dusting of powder.

Bronzer. Bronzer is passé for fall. It's great when you have that glowing summer tan, but on paler fall skin, it looks like you're trying a bit too hard. Instead, add a little fuchsia pop of color on the apples of your cheeks or blend a rosy cheek tint along your cheek bones.

Eye color. Eye color is always fun, no matter what season it is. I tend to wear rich colors all year long, so I keep my bright purples and pinks from summer through fall. But I also like to wear deep purples, smoky gunmetal shades, burgundy colors, and even warm browns. Pastel shades may look ghostly against the warmer clothing hues of fall, but if it goes with your favorite sweater or turtleneck, it's a do regardless of the time of year.

Eye liner. Fall is the time to bring back that smoky black eye liner. Unless, of course, you never put it away to begin with. Go with shimmery black, deep purple, or a rich brown to bring out the color of your eyes.

Lip color. You may need to leave behind your bubblegum pink gloss in favor of something a little warmer. Try a nude matte lip, a wine stain, or a burgundy gloss. A classy red is never out of style.

If you have a favorite summer color, there's no need to dump it. Just mix it up with darker eye liner, or a richer lip color.
