Beauty Guru: Real Confessions from a Real Hairstylist

Here are five hairstylist confessions you should know before you sit in the stylist's chair:

I don't like doing my own hair any more than you do

. I'm just like you - busy, busy, and more busy, so the last thing I want to do is spend an hour or more styling my hair each day. Oh, I want it to look like I do, but I simply don't want to take the time. But I do have plenty of tricks and ideas to make simple, fast hairstyling a reality. If you tell me about your lifestyle, I can help you find the haircut that matches it. If we work together with your natural hair texture, we'll be able to get you a look that's simple and easy to style, just like mine.

I'll be realistic with you. When it comes to hair, we women often want what we can't have. Straight-haired ladies are jealous of their curly counterparts, curly girls wish for hair they don't need to straighten every day. If there is a style that you just love, I'll do my best to help you get it. But I'll be realistic with you about the effort it takes to create and maintain that style, the amount of money it will cost, and if it's going to look good on you. The last thing I want is for you to go away unhappy, so you can count on me to tell you the truth about your hair.

I love that you trust me, but I don't need to hear your juiciest secrets. There's something about a sitting in a stylist's chair that feels totally therapeutic. And I love that you are comfortable enough to share your life with me - I'm genuinely interested in you, your family, your career - I enjoying hearing about all of it. But please keep the juicy gossip to yourself - some things are better left unsaid.

I like when you show me pictures of how you want your hair cut, colored, and styled. I'm a visual person, so it helps when you show me pictures of hairstyle that you like. It could be the hair color in one picture, the bangs of another, and the length of another. It will help if you tell me specifically what you like about each and every picture, and why. I can put it all together and create something for you that you'll love.

I love it when you love your hair. As much as I love hair, I'm also a people pleaser. What I want more than anything is for you to love your hair. Nothing makes me happier than when you look in the mirror and smile. When you're happy, I am too.

Are you a hairstylist? What confessions do you have? Are you a client? How about you? I'd love to hear what you think when you sit in the stylist's chair….
