Beauty Guru: Style Your Hair in Easy, Soft Waves for Your Date

Long, soft, loose waves are perfect for a romantic date. If your hair is long, the look is easy to achieve with the right products, tools, and techniques. You'll need a volumizing mousse, a heat protecting spray, and hair spray. You'll also need some clips, a great hair dryer, a large barreled, clip-less curling iron, and a large round brush. Practice these simple steps so that you can get your hair looking simply gorgeous for next great date.

Start with damp hair. Apply your volumizing mousse and blow dry for volume. You may want to create a deep side part while blow drying. If your hair is straight, turn your head upside down and blow dry the roots, being careful not to hold the blow dryer too close. Then, stand upright and use a large, round brush, to blow dry a small section at a time. Keep the look volumized but sleek. If your hair is curly or wavy, use a large round brush to dry the roots straight, and the ends mostly straight. Always blow dry down the hair shaft - from the root towards the ends - to avoid roughing up the cuticle and keep hair from looking frizzy and dull. If your hair is extremely curly, you may need to allow it to air dry and then flat iron before proceeding. Style bangs so that they are flicked over to the side.

Apply a heat protectant spray to your tresses. This is really important to protect your hair! Clip all your hair up, except for a one inch tall section along the nape of the next. Use a clip-less curling iron for this style. Wrap a one inch wide section of hair around the curling iron from the mid-strand to the end, being extremely careful not to burn yourself. Use a heat protecting glove if possible. Hold for a count of about twenty seconds. Use the lowest heat setting that works on your hair for the shortest amount of time possible to avoid burning or singing the hair. When that section is complete, spray it lightly with an aerosol type hair spray. Allow it to cool and dry before moving on to the next section.

Keep curling. Continue working in small sections from the nape to the top of the head until all the hair is curled. Spray lightly and allow all the curls to cool and set. Gently rake your fingers through the curls to soften the look.

Tips to try. To avoid looking like you have perfectly matched spiral curls, try a curling iron that is skinny on one end and wide on the other. Or use two different curling irons, of two different sizes, to randomly alter the size of the curls. The larger the iron, and the less time on the curling iron, the softer the waves. Remember to practice your style ahead of time so that you know if you like it and so you know exactly how long it will take you to get ready. When you're all set, give your hair an extra spritz of hair spray and your hair will look great for your date!
