4 Short Hairstyles You've Never Seen Before

After seeing how boring my hair looked in my New Year's Eve pictures, my resolution was to try something new. So I asked my stylist to give me a pixie (extreme, I know), inspired by this picture of Rihanna. I loved the result -- it was short, sassy, and easy to style.

Or so I thought. After a few days of using wax to turn my hair piece-y and funky, I started to get bored of it. Don't get me wrong, I love my new cut, but I was feeling a little stumped on what looks I should try next.

Luckily, I'm not the only one at the office who has short hair. One of our other staffers here has had a pixie for a while now, and she was happy to help me find ideas on how to style short hair -- by doing them on herself first.

You can find all seven of Jess' head-turning ways to wear short hair here, but check out my four favorite looks below, complete with her tips.

Look No. 1: My Go-To Style

1. I start by squeezing all of the water out of my hair after I get out of the shower. This helps cut down the blow drying time, since it's not dripping wet, says hairstylist Garret Dunton.
2. Using a round brush, I blow dry my hair to the side until it's dry. Since my hair has a bit of natural texture to it, I run a flat iron over it to smooth out any wavy sections.
3. Finally, I apply a bit of spray wax and comb it through using a flat paddle brush. Dunton says this will tame any flyaways while keeping the overall look flexible.

Look No. 2: Adding a Braid (Or Two)

1. I start by blow drying my hair using just my hands to give it a rough texture.
2. Once my hair is dry, I wrap small pieces of hair around the barrel of a 1-inch curling iron to create waves throughout my hair. Then I use my fingers to soften the waves.
3. Next, I braid three small sections of hair and weave them together to form a slightly larger braid. I secure it down with bobby pins, and bring some hair forward to cover the pins.
4. I finish by misting my hairstyle with strong-hold hairspray.

Look No. 3: The Edgy Pompadour

1. First, I apply a large amount of volumizing mousse to my hair. I let it dry for a few minutes to give my hair some hold before styling.
2. I wrap small sections of hair around a 1-inch curling iron out away from my forehead. This is how I end up with a mass of textured curls.
3. I spritz this front section with some water, and I use a comb to shape it upward, brushing out the curls.
4. Holding the pompadour in place with my hands, I mist it with a ton of strong-hold hairspray until it's stiff enough to stay up by itself.

Look No. 4: Romantic Finger Waves

1. I apply a ton of gel to my hair until it's wet. Starting with the hair near my part, I pull my hair back toward my ear, and place one finger over a section of hair.
2. Then I pull the surrounding hair forward over my finger to create a wave pattern. I pin this section into place to set the wave, and I do this three more times to get more finger waves.
3. Once my hair dries, I take out the pins and spray the finger waves generously with strong-hold hairspray to keep them in place.
