Which Beauty Products Do You Avoid like the Plague?

By Lexi Novak,Allure magazine

I'll admit that I have a mild (OK, extreme) obsession with beauty products. Duane Reade is to me what Dylan's Candy Bar is to kids; I can easily spend two hours at a single makeup counter; and at this very moment, I own five different kinds of hairspray. Despite this addiction, I'm not a fan of all beauty products. In fact, there are some that I won't touch. And I'm not alone.

Allure beauty writer Liz Siegel doesn't let a flatiron anywhere near her hair and editorial assistant Renee Trilivas steers clear of bronzer. "When I wear it, it looks like I have dirt all over my face," Trilivas explains.

After a couple horrifying experiences of my own, here are the two items I just don't mess with:

Lip-Plumping Gloss

Years ago, during a visit to the makeup counter, I came across what seemed like the Holy Grail of lip gloss-a hint of color, a splash of shine, and then the big payoff: lips like Angelina's! Who wouldn't plunk down some extra cash and buy at least three? I swiped it on with delight as I watched my lips flush and plump, and then things got ugly-literally. The tingly feeling quickly became a burning sensation (how I imagine it would feel if I had accidentally wiped hydrochloric acid across my mouth), and my lips swelled to allergic-reaction proportions. Never again.

Blush
I know you're probably wondering what could possibly be wrong with blush-especially since, for most people, it's a beauty essential. I accept that my aversion to blush is, well, unique. It all started back in my early ballet days, when "blush" meant two Barbie-pink circles generously swirled onto the apples of my cheeks. Then, I learned the art of blending, which translated to two racing stripes from my nose to my ears. No matter how I try to apply it, it just doesn't look right.

So blush is not for me.

How about you? Are there any beauty products you refuse to use?
