Celebrity Hair Tips Revealed

Do Up Your Hair for the Holidays

Ok, I admit it. I love to splurge from time to time as much as the next girl. And I have to tell you, my new favorite splurge is going to see celebrity stylist Ryan Crupi at the Andy LeCompte Salon here in West Hollywood, CA. But since I am Fabulous AND Frugal, there is no way I can go to see Ryan to prep for all of my holiday festivities - so I asked him for D.I.Y. tips on how to do holiday hair at home. It turns out, that you can recreate the salon experience - with you as your own on call stylist!

Celebrity Style

Ryan is known for doing the hair of celebrities like Kate Walsh, Rachel Bilson and Emanuelle Chriqui. Having long hair myself, I wanted to know how to re-create their natural, sexy beach-y look at home. Here are Ryan's easy steps. In just 15 minutes you too can get the look I WISH I had when I roll out of bed!

Ryan's 15 Minutes To Fabulous Hair

Follow these easy steps and you too can rock tousled waves without spending a ton of dough!

  1. After washing hair towel dry very well - remove as much moisture as possible.

  2. Spray all over with Ryan Crupi Ocean Spray (this is the only product I use, by the way)

  3. Blow dry with your fingers - keep your fingers running through it constantly. And yes, this is way more fun when Ryan
himself is doing it! But a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do….
Then flip your hair upside down and keep your fingers running through it.

  4. When dry, take a flat iron or curling iron and smooth it out or add curls, whatever you would normally do. The key is to NEVER use an iron on wet hair - it will BURN it. And to keep the iron constantly moving - you don't want 400 degrees sitting on your hair!

  5. After you use heat, let it cool. As Ryan explained to me, hair is like metal - use heat to form it and then let it cool to set. You need to let it cool down before finishing up your look.

  6. After it cools off, comb your fingers through your hair to achieve a more natural look (as he puts it, so you don't end up looking like Shirley Temple). Loosen your hair with your fingers to achieve a natural, sexy look, and he advises to "pull with tension" - don't be afraid to get in their and work with your hands. And … that's it! You don't need to spray again or add anything else to it.

Quick Holiday Do's

In addition to the loose, beachy look, I asked Ryan for some suggestions of how to pull together a quick, fancy up-do for holiday parties. His favorite no-fuss suggestions:

- Sexy Side Bun - A bun? Sexy? Don't worry - this is not your grandmother's bun! For a modern update, Ryan suggests pulling together a loose side bun - at the NAPE of your neck - for an alluring take on an old classic. Leave a few pieces strategically loose in front and you are good to go.

- Crowning Glory - A quick way to add some glam to a ponytail? Ryan suggests adding some height to your crown (top of your head) by back combing a bit on top, then after you've added a little height, secure your hair in a low ponytail - it will add just enough glamour to differentiate it from the same old pony tail you wear every day. And for g-d's sake don't f*ck it up by putting a scrunchy around it. Keep it simple and chic, ladies, please.

Avoid These Common Hair-Raising Mistakes…

So I asked Ryan, what are the biggest beauty blunders he sees? Here are a few hairy situations to avoid when doing your own hair:

-High School Is Over - sorry, ladies, but if you are over a certain age (like if your age begins with the number 3 or above) don't even try to rock those clip on feathers in your hair - you'll just look like you are trying too hard. Ditto for neon colored hair and other trendy trends. If your teenage niece is wearing it, chances are it is not meant for you!

-Serum Overload - The biggest misuse of product Ryan sees? Too much serum! He says women make the mistake of overloading on serum and putting it on top of their heads - instead of just on the ends - and they end up just looking greasy.

-Feel the Heat - As mentioned above, keep your hot irons moving at all times and never apply an iron to wet hair!

Fabulous Can Be Frugal

The best tip of all? Ryan explained to me that you really only need to spend money on ONE good hair cut a year - followed by
three maintenance visits. He said that anyone telling you you need a maintenance cut every six weeks is just wasting your
money. At the end of the day it pays to spend more up front for a really fabulous haircut than to go back every six weeks for a mediocre one! A great hair cut will grow out beautifully, and eliminate the need for lots of trims in between.

Many thanks to Ryan! But before you go off to get pretty, tell us your favorite holiday hair tips!
