Have You Ever Changed Your Hair to Please a Man?

Once I emerged from my turkey-induced haze, I checked my Twitter feed and happened upon this this from Evan Rachel Wood: "Michelle Williams said, 'no straight man thinks my short hair is sexy.' dude you need to stop hanging out with [jerks]"

My first thought was, "When did I start following Evan Rachel Wood?" And actually, I don't: It was re-tweeted by a lot of people I follow, which is what got my attention. My second was, "She might have a point." Because seriously, have straight men actually expressed a negative opinion about Michelle Williams's awesome haircut-to her face? I know men are supposed to love long hair, but I can't imagine anyone thinking her pixie cut is anything less than adorable. And if she has friends or boyfriends who have said such a thing, she should, as Wood suggested, stop hanging out with them immediately.

I started to wonder how I'd react to the kind of negative opinions Williams seems to have received. I've had a few haircuts over the years that were pretty short and a few that looked masculine, but I don't think I've ever been influenced by a man's opinion (gay or straight) on my hair. Sure, it's nice when your boyfriend, spouse, or even a stranger in a bar showers you with compliments about your new cut, but if someone did say to my face that he didn't like my hair, that's more likely to change my opinion of him than it is to influence my style.
