How to Heal the 3 Worst Beauty Burns

I recently stumbled across a product called "Glam Ear." It's heat resistant silicone molds made for your ears to protect your skin from burns caused by hot styling tools. I had two immediate reactions when I saw this product. One: OMG, this is totally something my mom would send me in a care package (along with an overload of OB Tampons and Lady Speed Stick deodorant). Two: OMG, where was this last month when I had my curling iron disaster?

Yes, it's a cheesy product, but as every woman knows, pain is part of the beauty process. But I'm not just talking heat tool burns. Consider the painful upper lip chemical burn, or the red bumps of razor burn. While "Glam Ear" may prevent some of these skin scorchers, what happens once you get the others? Dr. Debra Jaliman, top dermatologist and author of "Skin Rules: Trade Secrets from a Top New York Dermatologist," gave me some answers.

Problem: Heat Burn

Solution: "Treat the area with a cool compress. If the burn is on your face, use cold water to take the heat out of the skin," says Jaliman. Just don't grab the ice pack. According to Jaliman, "it's not recommended to go from two extreme temperatures." Finally, apply an antibiotic like Neosporin on the burn, and Jaliman also recommends that patients use Silvadine, "although it can only be obtained with a prescription."

Problem: Chemical Burn

Solution: While you can take the sting out with a cool compress, to really heal the burn, Jaliman advises using "a topical steroid like hydrocortisone."

Problem: Razor Burn

Solution: OK, I know razor burn isn't really a burn, but it's sort of similar. Jaliman explains, "Razor burn is caused by shaving too close to the skin, which causes inflammation and redness." To prevent the burn in the first place, try using shaving cream to create a barrier between the skin and the razor. But if you do get those painful bumps, "treat razor burn with fragrance-free aloe," says Jaliman.
