Kate Hudson

may be known for her on-screen charm and off-screen romances, but we've always loved her carefree style. As the Global Brand Ambassador and face of Almay, Hudson's low-maintenance beauty really shines. We spoke exclusively with the actress (who just finished filming "The Reluctant Fundamentalist") about her role with the beauty brand, her makeup and style tips, and her ultra glam mom, Goldie Hawn.

Shine: So many celebrities are pairing up with beauty brands. What made you partner with Almay?
Kate Hudson: Almay is a great fit. When they approached me I was excited because they wanted to bring more life to the brand, as you'll see with the new campaign. I also love the story behind Almay and why it's hypoallergenic. Al created the brand for his wife May because her skin was so sensitive she couldn't wear other cosmetics. I love Almay's focus on color, ease and bringing out your own natural beauty.

S: What are your current favorite products from the Almay line?
K.H.: Almay Intense i-color Eyeliner, Almay Smart Shade Makeup, Almay Eye Makeup Remover Pads, and Almay Intense i-Color Smoky-i Kits-they're so easy and come in great colors! The new Almay Smart Shade Perfect & Correct Primer is really good. It's nice to put on before foundation. It's really moisturizing.

S: What is your typical beauty routine for an average day versus a red carpet appearance?
K.H.: It's the difference between 5 minutes versus 2 hours. It depends on the look and the mood. I'm a no fuss person so day to day I use Almay, usually a little mascara and blush. For the red carpet, it's a lot different.

S: What beauty items do you always have handy?
K.H.: Usually lip gloss and concealer.

S: We're huge fans of your mother, Goldie Hawn. What beauty tips did she pass along?
K.H.: Sleep! Try to get eight hours a night.

S: What do you envy about your mother's looks or sense of style?
K.H.: I admire her ease. She has a specific thing and she knows how to do it. She can literally put on her whole face in five minutes in the dark and look great. She wore some amazing looks in the '60s and '70s. In the '80s she wore lots of Alaïa pumps, bodysuits and dresses. She always had a very good sense of style.

S: Did your style or beauty regimen change at all once you became a mom?
K.H.: Nothing has really changed because I always liked easy makeup.

What's your go-to item to feel sexy on a night out?
K.H.: Jeans, boots, and a loose top.

S: What current fashion trends do you love, and which do you wish would go away?
K.H.: Fashion trends I love…I don't know. To be honest, I've been so in mommy world right now I don't even know what's happening. If I'm not working, I'm breastfeeding, so I haven't really been looking through many magazines. I would say that what I would like to go away is this whole early '90s "90210" look that is starting to come back with all of the weird colors.

S: I just read your comments on the Stella McCartney Oscar dress from 2001 getting you on worst dressed lists. Can you name any other fashion regrets from the past, or childhood trends you can't believe you wore?
K.H.: When I was about 11 or 12 I had some pretty serious Esprit outfits that we have pictures of in my family, that's our good laugh for everybody. At least I took risks. I was an 11-year-old who took risks. I went for the hot, neon yellow unitard. I went there. And cowboy boots. All together. With a puffy jacket because it was cold. It was serious.

S: Do you have any style tips you can pass along to our readers?
K.H.: Wear what you love and what feels good for you. Don't let anybody else tell you what looks good on you.
