Oily skin produces excess sebum (oil) which is more likely to clog pores, often leading to blackheads and even acne (yuck!). While a facial mask may just seem like a luxury you get a spa, the reality is a clay mask can be done at home relatively quickly and easily. Here is what you need to know about treating oily skin with a facial clay mask.

How does a clay mask work?

The idea of using mud or clay as a skin treatment is not a new one. In fact, mud baths date back thousands of years when mud was said to have "miraculous healing powers." While mud may not be miraculous, it does contain some skin-treating benefits and the idea of "wet earth" treatments like clay and mud continue to remain popular. The most commonly used type of clay in facial masks is kaolin. Kaolin is known for its ability to absorb oil and moisture as well as provide a smooth consistency with easy spreading (making it ideal for facial treatments). Kaolin is usually combined with water, thickeners and humectants to help improve the feel of the product and provide a consistent drying time.

Who should use clay masks?

Since kaolin is a great oil absorber, clay masks are best suited for women with oily and/or acne-prone skin. Kaolin not only absorbs oil, it is said to have some anti-microbial properties which may be beneficial when treating acne.

What are the downsides of clay masks?

While clay is great for absorbing oil, it can be drying. Women with dry or sensitive skin should steer clear of these type of masks. In fact, even women with oily skin should only use clay masks occasionally since excessive use can irritate skin. Remember that a little oil is actually good for your skin--you don't want to strip all of your natural moisture away!

Bottom Line

Clay masks are a great (and natural!) way to treat oily skin. When buying clay masks, look for products that contain kaolin clay (sometimes referred to as bentonite clays). Just remember to follow the instructions and don't leave the mask on longer than the recommended time or else you can end up with dry, irritated skin. When used properly, clay masks can feel like a little bit of luxury in your own home!
