.Cooler temperatures have brought with it a chorus of sniffles and sneezes. What gives? Flu season is back, and this year, natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy have made it more important than ever to take care of our bodies.

Recently, we came across this article outlining some of the best "new" ways to fight the flu, from sleeping in on the weekend to staying away from the sick (though, really, are these new remedies?). And while we can't quite argue the value of a solid night of sleep - after all, says Dr. Russell Sanna of Harvard Medical School's Division of Sleep Medicine, exhaustion can reduce the efficacy of your flu shot by as much as 60 percent - we also can't help but wonder which alternative therapies should be added to the list.

This year, battle sore throats and stuffy noses with one of these natural remedies.

  • nurseryschoolOne of my resolutions is to Treat myself like a toddler. I've found that much of the advice aimed at children is just as helpful for me.

For instance, I'm reading Nicole Malenfant's Routines and Transitions: A Guide for Early Childhood Professionals (non sequitur: a surprising name for a childhood expert). She lays out several strategies for teachers to use in establishing routines and transitions for children. I'm going to try to apply them to myself.

Here's a tips list, loosely adapted:

    1. Turn routines into games. My evening tidy-up, while not quite a "game," is kind of fun and quite relaxing.
    2. Control the level of noise. I'm much calmer when there's no TV or music playing in the background. (Except at night. Weirdly, my husband and I fall asleep to all-news radio.)
    3. Organize space so it's attractive, well organized, and well lit. One of my most important Secrets of Adulthood: Outer order contributes to inner calm.
    4. Plan times each day for

The hilarious actress shares the secret to her amazing self-confidence. Plus: how she's raising strong daughters - and having a wacky, wonderful holiday.

Melissa McCarthy will do anything for a laugh. The wisecracking, Emmy Award-winning costar of CBS's Mike & Molly has guzzled ranch dressing on Saturday Night Live and taken a bite of Kristen Wiig's backside in Bridesmaids. As Megan, the hit comedy's wildly inappropriate sister of the groom, McCarthy also hilariously seduced an air marshal (played by her real-life husband, Ben Falcone) and walked away with the movie and an Academy Award nomination. Critics love the 42-year-old girl next door from rural Plainfield, IL, and so do millions of everyday women. They view the immensely likable working wife and mom as a regular-gal role model and cherish her as living proof that self-acceptance and perseverance can make any dream come true.

The secret behind McCarthy's success is simple: She will do whatever it takes to get a

If I've learned anything over the years as a relationship writer, it's that men and women really have no idea what the other side is thinking. Each gender also seems to have the same kinds of complaints against the other. And thus, the war of the sexes rages on!

On A New Mode, we spend a lot of time addressing the issues women have with their men. We talk about why guys act the way they do (we even wrote a book on it!) and uncover what's really going on inside their thick, manly skulls.

While that's all well and good, I've decided to take a different approach with this article by revealing the common complains men have against us gals (as much as we hate to admit it, we also have faults!). I've consulted with ANM's resident male-mind expert, Eric Charles, as well as some of my other close guy friends to find out some universal grievances men have. I have to admit, I'm totally guilty of committing a lot of these but whatever, you live and learn!

"Having Tiesto engage his strong following to help (RED) deliver an AIDS-free generation is a dream true for us," (RED) CEO Deborah Dugan tells Billboard.biz. "This is just the kind of firepower we need to bring the world's attention to the fact that we can end AIDS; a notion that was considered virtually impossible a decade ago."

  • Take your small dog for a walk.

Most small dogs have a ton of energy to burn. Whether you own a teacup or terrier canine companion, the best exercise for your pup is one that fits their stature and ability. With a few minor adjustments to almost any routine, you can create the perfect regimen to keep your furry friend happy, healthy and in good shape.

    Just a Little Jog

For years I owned medium to large-sized dogs. They were my constant companions. If I ran, they ran with me. If I swam, they took the plunge, too. But, the first time I tried to embark on a three-mile jog with my little Shih Tzu, I was in for a rude awakening. As much as she wanted to go with me, at about the 1.5 mile marker, she was done. She planted herself on the pavement and refused to go any further - even after a water break. So, on that hot, sweaty summer morning, I ended up walking back home with my pup in my arms.

Lesson learned: small dogs need smaller routes to run - it's that simple. Their little legs have to go twice as fast

  • walk on the beach with your dog for good exercise.

All dogs need physical activity to be happy and healthy. A tired dog is also less likely to have behavior problems such as chewing, digging, or excessive barking. Dog obesity is a rising epidemic, and exercise has a huge impact on keeping your pooch trim. But how do pet owners decide the best amount of exercise for a healthy, happy dog?

How much exercise does my dog need?

In general, all dogs need at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. But your individual dog may need more or less, depending on age, breed, and overall health.

Puppies have a lot of energy, but also need a ton of rest for their growing bodies. Keep play sessions frequent but short, to allow for down-time between activities. The same is true as our dogs age; they need shorter exercise sessions with less intense activities.

Different dog breeds have different physical needs. Brachycephalic dogs such as pugs or bulldogs are not built for aerobic activities and can easily overheat even on
