  • HAPPINESS and the EPIC WAVE

    Catching TubeCatching Tube

Great moments in life only happen once.

That being said, It's one thing to be present when you are riding an epic wave on a surf trip to Nicaragua, as is this case in the above video of my friend Hunter.

But in the bump and grind of everyday living, having the wherewithal to be present and own the moment is hard to do.

Matthieu Ricard is the happiest man in the world, according to brain scientists. Scans of Ricard's brain showed the most significant level of "positive emotions" in the left pre-frontal cortex of the brain, which is associated with happiness while Ricard is also able suppress negative thoughts on the right-hand side.

Matthieu RicardMatthieu RicardRicard, who is a Buddhist monk and French interpreter for the Dalai Lama, says it's all about training the brain. Like fielding short hop ground balls or surfing a wave, we are slowly realizing that having a sculpted, "fit" brain is even more important than a ripped core or supple ass.

As Ricard said, "Our life can be greatly

  • The Awesome Test: Take It!

    Love this!Love this!

In anyway you are hard on yourself for not being where you think you should be in life, take today, if not just today, to be stoked on who you are and where you are.

Because our world isn't built to make you feel good about yourself. Awesome is an inside job.

As Morrie Schwartz, subject of Tuesdays with Morrie, said, "The culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn't work, don't buy it."

The following 3 questions should help determine if you are awesome and able to rise above "the culture."

    1. Someone doesn't like you. What do you do?

    a. Ask them why and try to change yourself
    b. Go home defeated, cry, and go on an Adderall-induced smoking binge
    c. Tell 'em to stick it where the sun don't shine and walk away

    2. You feel badly about yourself when you are with a certain energy-sucking companion. What do you do?
    a. Ask them to go into

  • Moment of the Day: Timing, Faith and Broken Hearts

I tend to avoid quotes or messages with God, but something happened to me last week, something incredibly exciting and positive, only later to be told that it wasn't going to work out.

"Bad timing," they said. "And timing is everything."

I was so pissed when I read that. Like I don't know that time is everything.

But thinking back on my wedding Saturday, I'm grateful for those women who broke my heart allowing me to greet the bride who's just right for me.

I know back then when I was on my knees, in the pain chamber, struggling through a broken heart, someone said "Timing is everything."

"A beautiful, funny and delicious moment each day...keeps the stress away."
    Funny Moment

    Something is not right here.

Little kids want to be sharks or robots or Elmo for Halloween.

When daddy is dressing you up as a pack of Marlboros, one has to wonder what's wrong with daddy.

If you find yourself getting a little too excited tonight about dressing up (or dressing your kids up) as a pimp or hooker or lactating nipple (yes I saw that in the East Village) or "strung out ex-addict on a ripping binger," please remember Halloween is supposed to be a kid's holiday and the freaks are best tonight behind closed doors.

    Be Safe and Happy Halloween!

  • Why You Should Never, Ever Give Up

Even if you're not a sports fan, you might have heard that last week's Game 6 of the World Series was one of the greatest baseball games ever.

On two occasions, the Texas Rangers were just one strike away from the championship.

And on both occasions, the St. Louis Cardinals came through big time before winning on a dramatic gamewinning home run

If you've read my book, you might know my all-time low was being in attendance at another famous World Series game in 1988.

That's when LA Dodger Kirk Gibson also hit a dramatic, gamewinning home run, widely considered one of the greatest moments in sports history.

My dad and I left early and missed it.

I often share that Kirk Gibson moment in my Livin the Moment presentations with an extreme emphasis on not making the same mistake as I did. (Fun fact: that's why we named our puppy Gibson...as a constant reminder to be present and not miss the moments)

Last week, I received the following email from someone present

  • Why Does Failure Make You a Badass?

    Beautiful Moment of the Day
Sometimes we all feel like a fish out of water, like we're not smart enough to make it in this world, as if we're getting dragged under the current of life. Consider the plight of Abraham Lincoln.

As a young man, Abraham Lincoln went to war a captain and returned a private.

Afterwards, he was a failure as a businessman.

As a lawyer in Springfield, he was too impractical and temperamental to be a success.

He turned to politics and was defeated in his first try for the legislature, again defeated in his first attempt to be nominated for congress, defeated in his application to be commissioner of the General Land Office, defeated in the senatorial election of 1854, defeated in his efforts for the vice-presidency in 1856, and defeated in the senatorial election of 1858.

At about that time, he wrote in a letter to a friend, "I am now the most miserable man living. If what I feel were equally distributed to the whole human family, there would

  • Moment of the Day: A Dying Man's Last Halloween and Powerful Message

This photo features people very close to me, a MEGA Batman and a mini Batman, a father and son, preparing for Halloween. But in the spirit of superheroes, I would never, ever reveal their true identity.

Maybe it's just me but I think it's the most awesome, cutest photo ever.

As playwright Tom Stoppard says, "If you carry your childhood within, you never become older."

Something interesting happens on Halloween. We don't just dress UP. We also dress IN.

If you look at this photo deeply, very deeply, both MEGA Batman and mini Batman seem to be taking it very seriously. One in his thirties, one not yet 3.

There's something about dressing up that stirs an inner warrior still dreaming of saving the world or a swordsmen looking to unleash his passion or a princess who can charm the socks off her pre-school teacher…or daddy…or King of The World.

If you, like me, have gone too long without dressing up for Halloween, I have to ask the question….what's wrong

  • Moment of the Day: Mommy--Stripper?

I have a mantra that a beautiful, funny and delicious moment each day...keeps the stress away.
If you join me in feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, like you could explode at any time...
...take a second to enjoy this funny moment of the day...
As Henry Beecher said, "A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs, jolted by every pebble in the road."

  • If Mosquitos Sucked Fat Instead of Blood

I'm getting married in a few weeks and trying to slim down for the occasion. It's so hard. I really like to eat.

So to make it OK, I'm declaring today WORLD INDULGENCE DAY. This means go out and indulge without guilt!

Because who would you rather hang out with…someone with a bumper sticker reading "Peace is a Hard Ass" or someone with a bumper sticker reading "Peace is a hot chocolate chip cookie and a chocolate banana shake and a nice glass of Port and a wet kiss from a puppy that's not your own!"

I know most of the health freaks out there would single me out as a bad example, but I'm a lot more fun to hang with. That I can promise you!

As Erma Bombeck said, "Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart."

  • Instant Gratitude...If You Could Use Some

If you have a soft spot for hungry dogs, people down on their luck, or both, this photo might tear your heart out. But before you get mad at me for not sending a picture of a rainbow or a pretty person in a yoga pose, let me just say…sometimes it's good to venture to the shadows.

You can't know happy without sad... as you can't be sensitive to pleasure without also being sensitive to pain.

So take a moment to be grateful.

Because there are 925 million hungry people in the world, of which 36 million…let me repeat…THIRTY SIX MILLION... are Americans.

And many more hundreds of millions are struggling with another kind of hunger…a hunger in the soul for something that food cannot nourish.

As Dr. Jeff Mullan said, "In every interaction with every person, be sure you never make them doubt themselves in any way. Everyone is struggling in one way or another. You cannot measure how much love they have in their hearts."
