  • The Closer--Saving My Marriage, Part 1

    The other night, my Facebook feed was positively clogged with references to the Detroit Tigers' closer Jose Valverde. For those of you who don't follow baseball, a closer is a relief pitcher who is sent in late in the game to protect a lead. His job is to save the game. Valverde came in and, to sum up those status updates, kind of blew it. The game was almost lost on a couple of bad pitches. Detroit ultimately rallied, though Valverde was not credited with the save. How could he be? He nearly let the win slip through his fingers.

    I was thinking about the closer's position this morning while I was laying in bed, listening to my husband leave for work. He drove off at 5:22 and I never did get back to sleep. I've lost a lot of sleep lately, as a matter of fact. My marriage is in trouble and it's all I can think about. But this morning, I had an epiphany of sorts. I'm going to be the closer. Unlike our poor Mr. Valverde, however, I'm going to get the save.
