  • 3 Easy Fashion Trends Your Should Try for New Year's 2014 (Disco Ball Not Included)

What's New Year's Eve for, if not to have fun with fashion trends? Ok, maybe that's not the ONLY thing that comes to mind when you think of the evening, but it's definitely a night that invites clothing representative of true celebration.

Festive trends tend to teeter on a little scary, if taken too far. In moderation, though, almost anything works…ALMOST. Though I don't suggest you hit the town in a skin-tight sequin mini dress, be spontaneous and have a little more fun with your look as 2013 comes to a close.

Channel the below designers and try a little bit of sheer, embellishment, or feathers to ring in the new year. Start 2014 off with some fun--you have nothing to lose!

Burberry's sheer look (above) is beautiful, fun, and festive, but the longer hemline balances out the sheer slit and low neckline, keeping the look appropriate for whatever company you're spending New Year's Eve with.

  • Winter Outfit Ideas: 5 Things You Didn't Know You Could Wear with Sequins

    by Nikki Ogunnaike

Right about now is the time that I get super creative with winter dressing. That means mixing and matching prints, layering various pieces, and trying to bring as much fun to cold-weather dressing as possible. One way to do it? Wear sequins as much as possible. In search of some outfit ideas inspiration, I looked to some of my favorite fashion bloggers.

Wear them with plaid (above): Christine of The View From 5 ft 2 paired a black sequin pencil skirt with a very Christmasy tartan plaid shirt. Liz, founder of Sequins & Stripes, went a similar route. The trick here is to choose a plaid that has at least one color that picks up on the color of the skirt.

    From the product's Facebook page:

While there are hundreds of nonprescription topical pain relievers on the market, very few are directly for foot pain, and of those, not one of them can do what a single spray of analgesic Heel No Pain/Style can do in soothing your feet. This proprietary formula:
    * is the only foot product featuring lidocaine HCI--most commonly administered by dentists and doctors and clinically proven to safely deaden pain--in the strongest, over-the-counter concentrations combined with other ingredients to

  • Science is About to Make Fake Designer Handbags a Thing of the Past

    by Danica Lo

Getty ImagesGetty Images Science and fashion don't always go hand in hand, but sometimes it takes a little bit of lab work to solve a longstanding style problem. Like at Cornell University, where researchers are devoting their energies to solving the age-old knockoff problem--as in trying to find a way to detect counterfeit designer handbags.

Which brands are the scientists working for? Well, think of all the fake bags you see everywhere--perhaps Louis Vuitton, Prada, Kate Spade, or Coach? "You know which brands you see on Canal Street," Carlos Rinaldi, Ph.D., explained to a reporter from Popular Science.

The team at Cornell, which is headed up by textile scientist Juan Hinestroza--is working on a "sub-visual" technique where the individual fibers in handbags are coated with a brand's signature something-or-other--something invisible to the human eye and completely intangible to the average consumer, but a signifier that can be

  • How to Effortlessly Rock 4 Winter Trends at Once

    by Fawnia Soo Hoo

Getty ImagesGetty ImagesPop quiz! What are four of the hottest trends this winter? It's OK--here's a cheat sheet: cozy and chic sweatshirts as detailed by Avery, scintillating conversation-starting necklaces as explained by Brooke, the always classic pleated skirt, and, of course, KILLER knee-high boots. Or check out a visual example, courtesy of Jessica Alba, and her super-cute street-style outfit right here.

To start, Jessica doubled down on two statement pieces: a polka-dot baroque sweatshirt by Minkpink and a crystal-and-gemstone bib necklace. Her bejeweled collar, crisp white button-down, waxed pleated miniskirt, and flat patent knee-high boots were the perfect fashion-forward pieces to dress up the comfy, casual topper. By sticking with solid neutrals as accompaniments, Jessica kept the outfit from going into trend overload, but nice job in sneaking in a dash of extra color with the boxy aqua handbag. Love!

  • How to Work a '70s-Glam Dress for Your New Year's Eve Party

    by Fawnia Soo Hoo

Getty ImagesGetty Images It's kind of ironic (in a good way) that actress and expert budget gift giver Jamie Chung hit the red carpet for the premiere of The Wolf of Wall Street in a sexy, sexy dress that would have been right at home on the American Hustle screen. Right?

Her white frock from the Cushnie et Ochs spring 2013 collection calls the slinky silhouettes and plunging necklines of the '70s to mind, but with 21st-century updates--like the midi-length hemline and intricate draping at the waist. To bring the look into winter, Jamie opted for patent Christian Louboutin "So Kate" pumps in oxblood--as opposed to a more severe black--and a fun and fringey silver Katherine Kwei clutch. This look isn't for the faint of heart, but it would make for a very unforgettable New Year's Eve outing!

Getting used to wearing glasses can be hard--especially if it's your first pair or you're a kid. Remember this story from a few weeks back about that adorable little boy who didn't want to wear glasses because the other little kids called him four-eyes? Boo.

Well, an announcement today may just make wearing glasses cool--if not totally covetable!

Superstar boy band One Direction have revealed that they're launching a prescription eyewear collection with Vision Express Opticians. The eight-piece capsule collection will feature preppy plastic frames in a variety of colors and is targeted at tweens ages 6 and up.

This is pretty much the first time I've ever been jealous of a tween. Maybe if I try really hard, I can smoosh my face into a pair?

  • Brighten Up a Blah Winter Day like a Flirty, Fun London Girl

    by Fawnia Soo Hoo

Getty ImagesGetty Images There are 21 days until the new year, but I'm actually counting down the 26 long days until the season-four premiere of Downton Abbey. So many questions unanswered, like how's little Sybbie doing? What about Edith and her married man? And how will Lady Mary take the TRAGIC news (seriously, I'm still not over it yet). But in the meantime (and in real life), Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, looked bright and cheerful in New York City yesterday--all while nailing an eclectically elegant and very London-girl-chic outfit.

One may argue that her light outer layer and bare legs weren't necessarily weather-appropriate for such a wet and snowy morning, but Michelle did look divine. Her flirtatious floral printed Erdem trench and white Rupert Sanderson Elba pumps (which, like ivory frocks, are totally OK to wear all year round) do recall warmer, balmier days, but the deep orange Carven dress underneath brings a Read More »from Brighten Up a Blah Winter Day like a Flirty, Fun London Girl
  • How Does Your Clothing Size Make You Feel? Let's Discuss

    by Danica Lo

Getty ImagesGetty ImagesIn the vast and completely arbitrary world of women's clothing sizes, it's pretty clear that there is no real industry standard.

I don't know about you, but personally, I can wear a size-small T-shirt from the Gap, then walk across the street and not even be able to wriggle an arm into an XL top at Free People. And don't even get me started on pants--in my closet, I have everything from size 27 to size 31 jeans from two or three different mainstream brands, and shorts in sizes from 6 to 12.

Want to get really confusing? I do a lot of shopping from British e-commerce sites--where the numbers are bigger, so I've bought everything up to size 18 from retailers like Topshop and Marks and Spencer. Italian and French clothes? Anywhere from a 36 to 46 (big numbers!).

And if you've ever been in a wedding party and had to buy a bridesmaid dress? Whoa. I think the last time I did, I was size 100,000,000. What's up with that?

I've been bigger and smaller and worn sizes all
