  • Is Ugly a Bad Four-Letter Word?

Have you seen these UglyDolls? Yes, that's what they're really called, I'm not just being mean. I recently spotted one in an ad and I have been intrigued by them ever since. I have nothing against all those beautiful, perfectly plush toys out there, I just find it hilarious that someone decided to market, well, ugly dolls, too.

But that actually leads me to my point. I'd love to get my daughter one of these dolls and I think she'd really like it, but I have problem with them being called "ugly." You see, "ugly" is a bad word in my house. Maybe I'm just a crazy mom, but in my opinion curse words aren't the only bad words. "Ugly" is off limits in my house in addition to "stupid," "dumb," "hate," the list goes on. I'm sorry, but these are just words I don't think my 2-year-old should say or hear.

So my dilemma is, do I get the "ugly" doll and call it something else or should I not buy it at all because I really do wish they'd found a better name for them? Or am I just

  • Baby Bump Killing Your Back? You Need Maternity Shapewear (Really!)

I don't know about you, but when I was pregnant, the last thing on my mind was maternity shapewear. Pregnancy was stressful enough with the morning sickness and carpal tunnel, so the thought of wearing undergarments to "smoothe the hips" was the least of my concerns.

But maternity shapewear that smoothes your hips and thighs, all while supporting the weight of your growing belly, thereby alleviating back pain? That sounds more appealing, and I would totally give it a shot.

That's what this Blanqi Maternity 'Bodystyler' Under Bust Support Tank promises to do, and in case you're wondering what other expectant moms think of it, just read the reviews at Nordstrom.com. They're pretty good.

    Price: $68

  • Texting While Driving is Bad...But What About Texting & Strolling?

Texting while driving is dangerous, but that doesn't stop folks from doing it. I tell you, there's not a day that I'm on the road and don't see a driver looking down and texting while stopped at a light or, worse, driving on the freeway. Yikes! Can't it wait, people?

And then I saw this little iPhone Cradle for Strollers that "allows you to stay in touch while on the go." Pretty clever idea if you're traveling light or don't have any pockets, or if you're using it to play some music while you stroll. But I can already imagine the text/email addicts texting with one hand and pushing the stroller in the other. Not such a good idea in my book.

What do you think? Good idea or bad? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

  • How Old Is Too Old for a Stroller?

There are a lot of things I don't like about my Maclaren Techno XT umbrella stroller. I wish it was lighter and less awkward so carrying it up and down steps wasn't such a hassle. I also wish it was easier to fold and had a carrying strap so I could hoist it around with less effort. All that being said, though, I love my stroller. I don't go anywhere without my stroller. In snow, sleet, rain or shine, you'll fine me trudging around pushing my good ol' Maclaren.

Except for the past few days, I've been hesitating every time I get ready to go out with my daughter. Should we take the stroller or leave it? Last weekend as I was securing my daughter in her stroller a friend of the family casually said, "You better get out and walk. You're too big to ride in a stroller." Of course, my little girl leaned back in her ride and didn't pay him any attention. I, on the other hand, couldn't help but wonder if he was right. And then I started wondering if everyone on the street was thinking

  • Do You Vacation Without Your Children?

I love my daughter, I really do. But it's that time of year when I'm thinking about trips for the upcoming year and I'm seriously considering taking a vacation... without her. Of course, we'll take a trip or two as a family, but I've already started secretly budgeting for a 3rd trip just for myself.

Is that horribly selfish? I can't decide.

I've been justifying it to myself by saying, "Even moms need to take some time away to relax and rejuvenate. I'll come back to her well-rested and refreshed and I'll be a better mom because of it." But then I have flashbacks to the time my parents took a trip to Bermuda while I was away at camp. I was so sad. Beyond sad, actually. I called my grandmother, threw a huge fit and convinced myself that they didn't love me. I just remember feeling horrible and I would hate to make my little girl feel that way.

So I'm wondering--is it totally normal to take vacations without your kids? Or after you have a family, should you only travel
